Proof, right. Gio pressed his lips together in deep thought, wondering if Ed would demonstrate. If he had powers, he would volunteer to use them as proof for their mother. He trusted her completely, and knew that if she did know something, that if she did have powers, she might be as scared as they were. Or maybe she'd been waiting to tell them, sort of like parents waiting to tell their kids about adoption, or waiting until the children went off to college to get a divorce. Whatever the reason, if she knew, Gio was sure she was keeping it to herself for their own good. "If she asks for proof, we'll have to ask Ed." After all, he'd been skeptical about Calvin until he had proof.
Rory's logic was correct that, if powers flew under the radar maybe he could also do something, but the bridge of Gio's nose creased ever so slightly with doubt. He didn't say anything about it, instead cracking a smile for the first time during their conversation as Rory suggested his own power. "Yeah, you've been perfecting that one for many years," Gio agreed. "And my power is being blind." He lifted his glasses to his forehead briefly so the world around him dissolved into vague shapes. "If I think hard enough, I'll realize I've been navigating myself to the bathroom in the middle of the night by sonar." He laughed because, clearly, neither of them had powers. There went that theory.
"The thing that's bothering me the most," he said, back to being serious as he replaced his glasses on his nose, "is that there doesn't appear to be any obvious cause. I haven't questioned anyone in depth yet, but when my friends tell me how they first discovered they have a weird ability, it's sort of like it suddenly happened or occurred to them. That's the only thing they share in common that I've observed so far. And if it's an outside source that's making this happen, there is the possibility that some people won't be affected. I think it must be some kind of outside source – it's not like the human body can generate all these weird powers, especially not individually in so many people on this island."
