Ben wasn’t sure why he was awake. It was a weekend and he wasn’t working until later that afternoon, so why on earth had he rolled over and answered his phone at about seven? Why hadn’t he just pretended that he hadn’t heard the phone ring? Oh right. Because when he’d looked, it had Charlie’s name on the caller ID. He wasn’t sure why she was calling, but he’d answered nonetheless. When it had been just for a breakfast meeting, he rolled out of bed and showered, then headed out to meet her at Frye’s Leap.
He was still half asleep, and completely freezing, as he made his way down the street toward the café. His hands were buried deep in his pockets as he rounded the corner, leading to the street that the café was on. He still hadn’t wrapped his head around what had happened the last time he and Charlie had hung out. She’d seemed so different. Like he’d caught her off guard somehow or something. He didn’t know what he’d done… he’d always complimented her when she looked nice, that had been no different. She’d looked very nice in that dress, so he’d told her. Her reaction wasn’t exactly what he’d expected, but he’d learned long ago to expect the unexpected when it came to Charlie. She was very much about the unexpected.
He wandered into Frye’s Leap at about three past eight, and waved at Charlie when he spotted her, wandering over to her table. “Jeez is it ever cold out there!” he rubbed his hand together, sitting down at the table.
