"That's a terrible idea, mate," Rory responded in his lousy accent, trying very, very hard to keep a straight face as Eisen spoke. "And besides, wouldn't we have to hate each other then? You lousy, two-bit frog?" He smiled and watched as his friend got up to leave. "See you in a bit!" he called as Eisen closed the door.
Rory did fiddle with the Super Nintendo for a few minutes after Eisen left, but he quickly tired of Mario Kart. He'd decided long ago that he just didn't have the right type of hand-eye coordination that was required for someone to be good at video games, so he put the controller aside and looked around for a book with which to amuse himself until Eisen returned. Before he found a book, however, Rory's eyes fell first on the guitar that was sitting on Rory's side of the couch. He only hesitated for a moment before carefully picking it up and running thumb gently over the strings. Yes. That would be a good use of his time, wouldn't it?
Rory had never exactly been the musical type, but given that he couldn't do sports, he figured learning some sort of instrument would be a good use of his time, which is why he'd picked up the old guitar the Spinellis had in their basement a few summers ago. The internet, coupled with a few good books, had taught him everything he needed to know fairly quickly, although he'd never really considered himself particularly skilled at it, nor would he even think about playing it in front of other people, especially since so many other people on the island were so obviously gifted with music. No, Rory preferred to play for his own enjoyment, refusing to sully experience with the pressure of performance.
After fiddling around with some random chords, Rory's fingers began to pluck a familiar progression of notes to begin a song. He didn't really consider himself a musician in any sense of the word, but the guitar was at least a nice outlet to filter emotions into music, the the occasional song was always kicking around in his head. Singing was another one of those things that Rory rarely did, and never in public, so his raw voice has to strain to hit some of the notes, but the sentiment was there, and that was really all that Rory cared about.
