Katie nodded. Though several people had said just about the same thing Gideon was saying, for some reason it hadn't quite sunk in like it was now. She knew he only had the best intentions in mind, much like everyone else did, but it seemed less fake coming from him. The only other person who managed to make her feel that way was James. Even Mao gave off the impression that he was only saying it because he felt like he had to because of whose sister she was. But Gideon seemed like he meant it, and she knew he did. Years and years of being friends often had that result.
Still, it didn't make it any easier to hear. It was almost like she liked blaming herself. If she was at fault, then she'd have a genuine reason why she felt awful. It was stupid but thinking that she was the one who broke up with him was a lot better than knowing they broke up because she wasn't trustworthy. Even though, deep down, she knew she was...it just felt better than to chance the though that it was something wrong with her that she couldn't help. And it wasn't easy putting that into words, so she didn't even try.
Instead, she mumbled a quiet 'thanks' before letting out a sob. All that stuff about not wanting to cry was suddenly out the window as tears started rolling down her cheeks. "Why can't he trust me?" It was the closest thing to what she was thinking that she could muster out.
