"Let's be fair now, Mao," Wolf said, when Mao got on the topic of Felix, "he's not pure retard. He usually at least acts like he's nice." He did whenever Wolf saw him, but he didn't know the guy very well. Felix being Luke's best friend and Mao being another good friend of Luke's probably put Mao closer to Felix than Wolf was, but that didn't really change how Wolf felt about him. If he could say nice things about Luke he could say nice things about Felix, no matter their less than desirable traits. Wolf was fair like that, except the good traits didn't really help tip the scale when Wolf wanted to hate someone.
Part of Wolf wanted to feel bad for Mao when he bemoaned his lack of luck with the ladies, but part of Wolf also wanted to laugh and make fun. Could Mao really blame girls for not falling for his shitty pickup lines? Could Mao really blame girls for not falling for his crossdressing? His blatant immaturity? Okay, fine, scratch the last one. Wolf was immature too and he still got girls.
The next topic was far more interesting, and Wolf entertained the prospect of Mao falling for him. It just seemed weird. No matter how well they got along, no matter how close they were as friends, Wolf could only imagine it being extremely awkward if they ever tried to date.
"Why didn't you fall for me?" A similar lopsided smirk graced Wolf's face as he asked. "Is it because I have two moms?" The smirk grew into a full-fledged smile. "Is it because I'm deaf?"
