It had been an interesting year, that was for sure. And Rory could only hope that this new year would begin better than the last one had ended. Given all the drama that had dominated the last few days of December, Rory was more than ready to clean the slate, and what better day to do that then the first day of the new year? Everything seemed to have worked out in the end anyway - Lexie was with Eisen, Mal was with Ed, even Gio had had a date (or something) for New Year's. All was right with the world.
Why, then, did Rory's heart feel so inexplicably heavy as he rolled up the ramp to Eisen's apartment? Perhaps it had something to do with the residual tension that remained between the two best friends, tension that they would (hopefully) work out after this visit. Rory's melancholy ran deeper than that, of course, but it wasn’t like Rory was going to admit that. He and Eisen already had enough to talk about without bringing Rory’s stupidity with Fiona into the mix. Although he was positive that Eisen would understand (at least to a point), he was equally positive that Eisen would take Fiona’s side in the matter, and the last thing Rory wanted today was to get a lecture about how he didn’t have enough self-confidence. Better to just deal with the problems at hand and deal with the other stuff later.
Reaching Eisen’s door, Rory hesitated for a moment. Ordinarily he would’ve let himself in, but today… today he knocked, allowing Eisen to let him into his space instead of barging in unannounced. It was a subtle gesture, but Rory hoped that it would carry weight nonetheless. “Hey, happy New Year!” he exclaimed when the door was open, offering the best smile he could manage. “Awake already and it’s only half past two! I’m proud of you, Eisen.”
