Maybe sometimes, we feel afraid, but it's alright
The more you stay the same, the more they seem to change.
Charlie had no need for big parties on New Years. Maybe one day, when she was older, that would be attractive to her. But until then, she would be happy to just do what she was up to right then. Which was sprawled out on her bed, head on Ben’s thigh. The top bunk was more along of the lines of a pile of junk right then, but they were on the bottom bunk. The TV across from them was an old relic that Charlie had saved when her parents decided to get a better TV for the family room. But it was playing the second season of “Blackadder” just fine, a bowl of popcorn forgotten. It was a little past 11:30, but Charlie wasn’t really paying too much attention to that as she stayed just where she was.
She had swiped of a bottle of bubbly for them, and it was half sticking out of her mini fridge. Her parents really needed to learn to keep track of their booze better. She fully planned on getting Ben a little drunk that night, if only to make him loosen up a bit. He was so uptight, it was a little maddening at times. But the technopath was blissfully unaware that Ben had any feelings for her other than platonic. If she had, she wouldn’t have been nearly so willing to sprawl out like this with him, or to tease him about being a virgin. Actually, she would have gone into a state of extreme confusion.
Ignorance was bliss.
“Do you think they knew?” Charlie asked after a moment, rolling onto her back and looking up at Ben. “That they were doing something great? Hugh Laurie and everyone else; I mean… they were just making this silly low budget show, but did they like… guess? That this was going to be something that people would think was just so amazing?”
