Who: Ben and Calvin, open to Charlie What: Friendly consoling and important questions. Where: Calvin’s. When: About a half hour after this. Rating: Low. Status: Incomplete.
If Ben hadn’t already been suspicious of the fact that there was something deeper than just the breakup with Katie on Calvin’s mind, he’d have known now. It didn’t take him an hour to walk to Calvin’s house. Even in the zero-visibility snow, it only took twenty minutes, tops. So how had Calvin known that it would take him an hour? Shaking the thought off, he pulled his lower lip into his mouth, running his tongue along the frozen blood (which, of course, thawed it) and sighing a little bit. Only he would fall and smack his lip on the short walk to Calvin’s.
Crooking his arm just so, he scratched the back of his neck and winced at the feeling that the particular movement of his arm brought. Not one of my brighter moments, obviously, he thought as he reached up to knock on the door.
He’d ask Calvin how he knew about that later, if it came up. Of course, now that he stood at Calvin’s door, it occurred to him that he’d left the Monty Python DVD set that he was supposed to bring back at his place when he’d gone home to see if they had any more cocoa mix. Such was life when you were a clumsy, distracted teenager, he supposed. Calvin wouldn’t care, of that he was sure, and he’d make it up to him later. Of course this meant that he’d brought absolutely nothing that he’d said he’d bring, other than himself. Luckily for him, he and Calvin had been friends long enough for him to know that it was a risk you took when friends with Ben. He’d apologize profusely and provide an undoubtedly much-needed distraction for his forlorn friend.
