Around the Fan house, Christmas was celebrated for more of the commercial reasons than the religious. They still got a tree, and cooked a special dinner. Decorations were hung, cookies were baked and gifts were exchanged. It was more for the fun of it all, and there wasn't a thing wrong with that. Christine liked celebrating Christmas with her family and with her friends. Especially because most of her friends couldn't share in the next big holiday for her. The Chinese New Year. It fell on February 3rd that year, but that seemed like a long ways off on December the 25th. So, she'd simply done what she did best. She spent time with her family, trying to keep the peace between all of her siblings. She'd baked cookies by the dozen and she'd opened presents, thinking about her friends and wondering if they'd liked their gifts. She always got Seth and Francis gifts and honestly didn't expect anything in return. And, of course, it wouldn't be right for her not to give them cookies. It was just her thing.
But once that was all over and done with and the day had wound to a close, she was content to retreat to her room and just think. Strings of music for the cello ran through her mind, and before she really knew it, she found her cello in her hands. She sat and tuned the strings, contemplating what to play. To play what she already knew so well, or to experiment and make something up of her own. Both were equally as pleasing. Practiced hands slid the bow across the strings, bringing out the rich and deep tones of the instrument. She slid in and out of classical pieces she had long since memorized. Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven...all of it was interspersed with little bits and pieces of music coming purely from her imagination. The music calmed her, and made everything feel so serene. The noise from her siblings going about their business melted away, left with room to think.
As the year got closer to coming to a close, things would be changing. Her work was getting better and she was gaining more responsibilities...even if her boss was still scatter-brained and forgetful. And even better than that, everything had finally gone through for her new house. It was a small place. Enough space, but not too much. No crowd of siblings around. It was pretty much perfect. Christine had loved it since she first saw it and even if it would be different than what she was used to, she knew that she was more than ready (and had been more than ready) to make that step.
The melancholy tones of her cello echoed off the walls as she imagined herself in her new house. And of course, she'd also have the grand piano. No one in her family really played anymore, save for her and her parents from time to time. So it'd have a new home with her. Idly, she thought of having Francis let Dietre know. The boy loved the piano from what she knew, and it wasn't fair that he only got to play when he was at the dance studio. She also got the feeling that he'd be more comfortable in a less...busy environment. And beside just that, she did want to get to know him better. It'd be a good opportunity, she thought. Perhaps they could even do duets.
Adding a bit of vibrato to a long last note, Christine drew the bow away from the strings, sitting there with a contented smile. Things were looking up.
