“Something different, yeah. Effortless, you know? We just get along without even trying. You’ve always been one of my closest friends, and you know what they say,” he paused, “to really be compatible with someone, you have to be friends, right? So…” he bit his lip and turned his eyes down to the floor. She touched his face accidentally and he smiled, a bittersweet expression because it was nice that they were able to restrain themselves a little less, but honestly, it was still hard. What that’s worthwhile in life isn’t hard, though, right? It’ll work out. It has to, he thought.
“As for what the hell took me so long,” he chuckled, “lots of things. One, I didn’t want to ruin our friendship. Two, I didn’t feel like I was good enough for you. I felt like you could do better,” he added, biting his lip. “A few others, but those were the most prominent…”
As if she’d read his mind, once again she eased his mind in her own Lexie way. “I’ll tell you what I’ll do,” he said with a little smile. “If Rory comes around, if he calls me back, I’ll come over to your place and tell you pretty much right away, okay? Other than me, you’ll be the first to know,” he offered, leaning down to kiss her on the cheek. It was hard to go back to that, but Eisen knew what he had to do.
