It wasn’t fair. No man should ever be placed in the position of choosing between the woman they’d loved since high school and their best friend. It was like choosing which half of his heart to keep. It wasn’t fair! Eisen had always tried to be the best person he could. Always been on Rory’s side when he’d had to make tough decisions. Maybe asking him to take Eisen’s side against Ed wasn’t right, and Eisen would never do that. But to be angry at him…to ignore a phone call and to act like he didn’t know that Eisen had wanted this for years? It was almost a feeling of betrayal.
And now, even though Lexie was holding him and comforting him, and he knew that she wanted to be with him, they’d have to pretend that this hadn’t happened. They’d have to ‘just be friends.’ It was almost enough to anger him, but for the most part, it just hurt. For the most part, it felt like betrayal.
He knew why Rory was mad, and really, he understood it. But it was Rory’s encouragement that made him act in the first place. Rory was the one who told him to go for it after the date was over, and even though he knew that maybe he could have handled it better, it was because of that encouragement that he’d been bold enough to do it. Needless to say, he was still a little bit shocked. “I hope you’re right,” was all he could say to Lexie’s hope that Rory would come around.
“This isn’t fair,” he looked at Lexie, sighing heavily. He wanted to hold her hand, but it was hardly appropriate. “I don’t want to go back to that. But if it’s all I can have right now, I’ll take it…” he finished miserably.
