Lexie was proud (and a little relieved) when he smiled. Good. No failing today. Hopefully, this would turn the tide of their evening, even if she was probably going to go home pretty soon. They were finished studying, after all.
“Oh Eisen, you didn’t have to get me anything!” she protested, as she almost always did when her friends even thought of offering her gift in return for the ones that she gave to them. Lexie was one of those weird, crazy people who actually preferred to give gifts than to receive them, although her condition was usually that she wanted to see the other person’s reaction as they opened their present. As usual, though, her objections went unheeded, and she was left with no other option than to open the box he’d proffered.
At the kiss, though, she froze a little. That was the second time he’d done that, and this time she wasn’t in the hospital. Granted, she’d just given him a present, but... No. Lexie shook her head just a little and smiled up at him, hoping that he wouldn’t see the strain of her mouth or the emotion she was suppressing behind her eyes. “You’re very welcome Eisen. It was the least I could do after you gave me all those awesome presents at the hospital.”
With that, she turned her attention to the box, partially as an excuse to look at something besides his face. She was afraid that the longer she looked, the clearer her expression might become, and she didn’t want him to see her hurting. Fortunately, the present was an excellent distraction. She let out quiet little squeak upon seeing the box’s contents and she immediately took out the earrings and held them up admiringly. “They’re perfect Eisen!” she squealed, fumbling to put them in her ears right then and there. She hadn’t worn earrings that day, so the holes she had in her ears since she was twelve were currently vacant. “They match my necklace!” As usual, Lexie was wearing her favorite treble clef necklace, and the earrings were a perfect match.
