When Brendan walked into the kitchen area, he found a box on the counter. The sight of it peaked his interest because it certainly wasn't his and he was pretty sure that Fiona didn't have anything in boxes. Where did they have the room to keep a box full of stuff? Maybe someone broke into the apartment to leave a box full of evidence behind. But the place didn't look broken into; the windows weren't smashed or the door open and he certainly didn't hear anything. Perhaps Fiona got the box from her parents? Yes, that had to be the reason. It was certainly more logical than someone breaking into their apartment to leave things. Brendan had obviously been reading too many mystery novels.
Rationally coming to the conclusion that the box belonged to Fiona, he turned around to move away from it to try to ignore it. He didn't want to invade her privacy. They had been getting along so well over the last few months and he was sure that she would be home soon from wherever it was that she was; catching him looking through her potentially personal items could very well have put a damper on their friendship pretty quickly. Besides, it was wrong. But.....
The box was just sitting there and it like a huge elephant in the room now. Brendan turned around and looked at it intensely, trying extremely hard to fend off his curiosity. He glanced at the door once more. He listened for footsteps up the stairs, but there was nothing. His gaze returned back to the box. Maybe if he just had a quick look?
Brendan moved back towards it as if there were a bomb inside of it. He slowly started opening the folds and peeked inside. Christmas decorations. A smile burst out on his lips when he saw them and opened the box up completely. The box was full of Christmas lights, little ornaments, decorations and every sort of Christmas-y thing you would expect, except for presents, of course. Brendan got a little lost in looking through the box and pulling a few things out to look at.
