Laney chanced looking up. He was a teacher at her school, but she wasn't in his class. He must teach a class not available to freshman. She shifted her weight uncomfortably, glad that she had the glasses, but also glad she didn't run into someone she specifically knew. "I know who you are," she said coolly, because that's how she imagined girls 'her age' were supposed to talk. "I'm Mel. Not really new. Just visiting family."
She was so proud of herself for using a name that she could remember. It had just come out. No one ever called her Mel, or Melanie (except maybe JJ). No one, especially not someone she'd never officially met before, would know it was really her.
She refrained from smiling at how impressed with herself she was. It was early in the conversation. She'd celebrate later.
