Katie was like a ghost. She hadn't eaten yet, she hadn't been home since last night and she hadn't talked to anyone since it happened. It took everything in her not to cry, which she hadn't done yet, not even when they were breaking up. It was something she couldn't will herself to do. Crying meant that she accepted what happened. And she didn't. She wouldn't believe it. Not yet anyways.
She passed the beach, barely looking out at the ocean. She'd stayed there most of the night, just staring at the waves as they washed ashore. Her mind had been full of questions, of replayed scenes, of Calvin. Now, even thinking about the water made her sick to her stomach. She had to get away.
She wasn't far from when she spotted a familiar face in the distance. Mao. Her brother's best friend. She'd been avoiding James since Calvin left the house. She didn't want him finding out. He would surely not be happy. She wasn't sure if she could face that. The 'I told you so' face, or something similar. It was enough to make her want to cry, so she pushed it out of her mind and tried to pass Mao without acknowledging him. She didn't think it would work but it was worth a try.
