Dietre always made good on his promises, and this was one he wanted to keep. Even though just about everything about a school football game repelled him (the screams, the competitiveness, the testosterone, the whole social scene), he was determined to bravely face it all for Glorianna. She had been so happy when she announced that she had made the squad, and since seeing her cry on the day they met, Dietre wanted to only ever see her smile from then on. So, of course he had to come to a game, anything to please his friend.
At first he had stood close to the field to have a good view, but it wasn't long before it became too much for him. The crowd's cheers and applause sounded like roaring in his ears, and having so many people behind him gave him the feeling that too many sets of eyes were boring into his back even though the logical part of his brain knew that they were all really engrossed in the game. He soon gave up his post and retreated to the top of the stands, this early in the season meant there were still empty sections, places where no one wanted to sit unless they had to.
He was much more at ease sitting by himself, even if he couldn't see as well. He was given a wide berth by the rest of the crowd, no one really wanted much to do with the somber looking boy in the long black coat. He was hard not to notice, but people always quickly averted their gaze the way one would when driving past a graveyard. But Dietre didn't notice, he kept his eyes on Glory and only Glory, her cheerful energy warming him even at this distance.
When the game was over, he sat until the stands cleared before making his way to the side of the field to wait until his friend was free.
