Janey abruptly turned away from him and stared off into the playground. He could always do that to her, hypnotize her in a way, put a crazy spell on her. She hated it, but she was drawn to it every single time. "Yeah. Whatever." She pretended like she didn't care. It was easier than facing your demons and the difficulties that plagued you. In an attempt to get his hand off her shoulder, she lightly pushed off the ground so that her swing would move just a little bit. For as blunt as she could be, she had a hard time hurting people's feelings.
"So talk to me about something else." It was better to be distracted. Hence the smoking. It came back to her mouth, and she held it there as her other hand pulled the arm of her sweater down and over the eye she had drawn. He was always looking at her. That was why she drew it. She always felt like he was looking at her. And for all the apparent vagueness in her art, there was always something substantial behind it. Things she didn't actually catch until later.
