Natalie was trying not to sulk. This was proving difficult, but she thought that was pretty understandable, seeing as no one took kindly to being tricked--which she had been, whether her dad was going to admit it or not! What she assumed was routine curiosity about what she planned to do with herself over the weekend had turned out to be entrapment. When she had said, "Nothing special. I just want to get out of the house," she hadn't meant, "...so please ask me to get lunch with you at the cafe," after all.
But that's what it had turned into. And, since she didn't have any other particular plans, she hadn't been able to figure out a way to weasel out of it in time to actually do so. So, now she was sitting in her dad's car while he drove there, staring out the window and not talking and totally planning to buy the most expensive thing on the menu since he was going to be paying for everything. What, was he expecting actual conversation after he practically forced her to go? Hah, fat chance!
...Except the quiet was driving her nuts. She knew she'd end up cracking sooner or later; she just wasn't going to admit that just yet, even to herself.
