"Em, if relationships were simple, do you really think there'd be libraries of books written about them?" Calvin's tone was patient, although Emily's resistance to his logic was beginning to grate on his nerves. Then again, this was pretty standard for their conversations, so he tried to let it go, especially since she was obviously so upset. "Kittens are nice..." which they were, but that was the closest he was going to come to conceding the point to her. His hand fell still for a brief moment as he reflected on Emily's words about his relationship with Katie. He sure hoped it would be forever, but, like Emily, he was trying not to get his hopes up too high - every day he was more sure that Katie had a better excuse to dump him because of his stupid, health-threatening visions. But he didn't even want to think about that now.
He bristled a little at Emily's implication that he didn't know what it was like to be let down. "I resent that, Em," he told her warningly. "I'm with Katie now, but that doesn't mean that she was the only girl I ever had a crush on. And Em, come on. You've been interested in dating for what, six months? You're sixteen. Give yourself some time." He sighed. "I'm just trying to see the bright side, Em. Alright? Every cloud has a silver lining. I mean yeah, on one hand you've got to be careful, but on the other, look what you can do! You can control the weather. That's way better than a lot of other things."
