What a surprise! Mao in detention. Again. It was one of his answers on a math test that landed him in here today. It was a word problem where you had to give a reason as to why the person it was about was wrong in their calculations or whatever. The character was a girl, so, naturally Mao's answer (when he couldn't figure out the real one) was simply, 'Because she's a woman.' Unfortunately he had a female math teacher, and apparently she didn't find innocent sexist jokes very funny.
Mao could only sigh when his test was passed back to him with, 'See me after class!!' written in red pen across the top. Same ol' same ol'. Red pen had long lost the ability to strike fear in his heart. It pretty much stopped being affective in the third grade.
Now he was spending the afternoon doodling in his notebooks instead of writing an essay about gender myths and how evil machismo was or whatever he was ordered to do. Mao recognized some of the other 'detention' crowd. It was sort of like the Breakfast Club except no one here was going to grow as a person and make life long buddies out of it all in the end.
He worked on adding details, like a sombrero and maracas, to a drawing of a Day of the Dead skeleton he was drawing, humming what sounded like Hot Child in the City, likely waiting until the teacher assigned to watching over the room got bored and left before belting out the lyrics.
