Sometimes, Robert didn't know why he bothered.
This was one of those times. He knew he wouldn't be able to go cold turkey on his sleeping pills, yet here he was trying to do just that in one of his approximately twice yearly attempts. And what did he have to show for his efforts? Nothing beyond the fact that he was barely functional and the dark bags under his eyes. Still, as stubborn as he was, he couldn't just admit his loss just like that. He was going to tough it out for a whole week before he conceded defeat. And, of course, he couldn't just put his life on hold for that period of time, so he was just going to have to go out and about in his semi-conscious state.
Like he was now. Grocery shopping was something that had to be done, and there was no way he was going to let mere sleep deprivation stop him. He had already picked up the essentials--that is to say, an odd assortment of tea involving both things meant to put him to sleep and those loaded with caffeine, but nothing in the middle--and was now working on grabbing more frivolous things, like actual food. He wasn't going for his normal selections, but that was because he was too tired to cook. As such, he was just going to make do with instant food for the time being.
Avoiding the worst of that junk, he decided he would just stock up on canned soup. It was definitely better than some other options, so he would be okay with subsisting on it for a week. Fishing a few cans off the shelf and stacking them neatly in his cart, he accidentally dropped one along the way, merely grunting in irritation as he watched it roll across the floor.
