Emily stood at her window and stared at the neutral day, not pouring rain or bitterly cold, but not beautiful and perfect. Normal, average, nothing exceptional. Ever since that incident with Evan and the wind and also that discussion with Jacen she had been curious...did her joking really hold any truth? Did her emotions and the weather have a link? Could she possibly control the weather? She shook her head, 'No, of course not, that's crazy. Me? Control the weather?' She turned and took a few steps away from the window then froze.
Emily turned to face the window again, there was no harm in just trying. Once she knew for sure she wouldn't worry about it anymore. Right, she'd look back on this and laugh. Okay, so she needed a strong emotion to focus on. How about anger, that's a strong emotion. She shut her eyes and focused on things that made her angry. She thought about the false friends she made when she entered high school, the ones who were only after Evan. Also how Evan didn't dissuade their attempts and flirtation. Gosh, he was such a jerk! A crack of thunder shocked her back to the moment. She opened her eyes as he jaw dropped slightly, the sky had filled with black clouds and she saw a flash of lightning. 'Okay, that was probably just a fluke, we've been having freak storms, this doesn't prove anything.' She then shut her eyes, new emotion, happiness. She smiled Evan's hugs, girl talk with Katie, ice cream with Calvin, and...tea with Jacen Allen. Jacen. She gave a little sigh. He was so sweet, a good guy, a great catch for any girl. She was lucky to have him as a friend. She opened her eyes and was almost blinded by the sun shining, it was beautiful out. 'Like I said, freak storms, this still doesn't mean anything.' Okay, one last emotion, sadness. She shut her eyes, sadness, Max choosing Casey...no...she wasn't really upset about that anymore. It still hurt, but for some reason not as much. Evan's harsh words from a couple of weeks ago...no, he had apologized. Her eyes fell on the invitation to her birthday that still rested on her end table. The invitation Bethany, her step-mother had sent out. Not her mother, not her father, her step-mother. There it is, her parents. Her father buried in his work and her mother's absence. Their indifference to her and what happened to her. It wasn't fair...she needed her mother, she needed her father. She missed them both. Tears escaped her shut eyes as a sob broke from her chest. A gently pinging noise on the windows made her open her eyes. It was raining. 'No, no, it can't be true! Cycle through them faster, that'll prove it's not true.' Keeping her eyes opened she focused on each emotion. Anger, fake friends, the clouds darkened and thunder shook the house, happiness, Jacen, the clouds cleared and the sun shone, sadness, her parents, clouds rolled back in and it started raining.
It was true...all of it. She could control the weather.
