Setting: A dirty back alley
Time: after dark
Characters: Denver and Alex
Rating: PG-13 for drug use
Summary: Denver likes zydrate. Alex can help.
Denver swayed down the dark streets, the smog obscuring his vision of what was at the end. Not that he minded anyways, he was just looking for a high. The Zydrate Support meetings always left him feeling the same, fed and well wanting. The way everyone told their stories of sobriety and how boring their lives were was, well, boring. And it wasn’t a help when they discussed how wonderful the last hit of Zydrate was, and now he was craving the stuff again.
Where the brick wall met the pavement there was a tiny crack through which grass was trying to grow. And a dandelion. Its head was the sort of sunny yellow that only existed in Z-dreams, and for a second Alex thought she was having one. Then the heady scent of the city’s smog ate its way into her brain and she remembered that Z-dreams were never so unpleasant. Besides which, she was outside, and working, no less. She noticed the staggering silhouette at the other end of the alleyway. That had to be her cue that the ZSN meeting had let out. She had to thank GeneCo for these meetings, they brought the best business in town. A few long strides and she was walking in step with the junkie. “Hey,” she said with what could be called a con man’s smile.
He spun around looking for the source, his dreads whipping along, completely missing the speaker until he lifted up his welder’s goggles and tried again. It was a wonder that he could see anything with the amount of soot and grease caked onto them. He looked startled and slightly fearful, but calmed down once he saw that the she wasn’t dressed as a Repo-man or another of GeneCo’s goons. He grinned like a fool at her, “Hel-looo! You just missed the worst day of my life, it was share your trip night at the Support.”
She almost laughed, but chequed it. Sometimes junkies could be damned hilarious. "Oh man, sounds brutal. I take it the sharing was worse than the trip?" At that she actually did giggle, a little bit. She shoved her hands into the pockets of her trenchcoat and sort of followed his footsteps. He was pretty lucid, pretty good at walking for a junkie. She hoped he wasn't one of the 4.6% of ZSN groupies that actually did stay clean. What a waste of time then.
Ducking his head he chuckled a bit, it wasn’t often people took time to talk with him unless they wanted something or if he wanted something and he did. “Oh you have no idea, it just left me with bittersweet memories and a burning desire. If you catch my drift.” He looked at her quickly, before returning his concentration on making sure his legs went where he wanted them to go.
Alex gave him a look that she liked to hope was dangerous, but Doll told her just made her look even more like a cartoon character. Whatever. This junkie wasn't in any position to judge her, and besides, Doll was just jealous because she was out living the crazy life. "I think I do, kid," she replied, though she wasn't sure she was in any position to call him 'kid'. "I'm assuming you've got your money?"
His eyes lit up with what could be described as excitement and mischief, although he meant no trouble. In combination with his ridiculous smile, the tricolor dreads, and the filthy goggles he looked like a crazed homeless zydrate junkie, which was just on mark for him. “Sure thing!” He tried to stop his feet as he frantically patted down his pockets but to no avail, he tripped and ended up sprawled out on the street. Laughing, he was laughing, but in his hands he held money, an odd assortment to be sure. But it was legitimate. He tried to stand up, only to lose balance again and fall back.
"Oh, kid," Alex shook her head and extended her hand to help him up. She actually felt a little bit guilty, for a second. "Come on," she added, and gave him a little wink.
Looking between the offered hand and his money stuffed hands, he tried to make a decision. He decided to move all the money into one hand as he reached out with the other to the offered help. He was still chuckling as he got up, “Hahaha, I ain’t no kid.” He smirked, raising a single brow in amusement.
Alex smirked, and tugged the guy a little bit close. Mostly for her own entertainment, it wasn't like junkies tended to get must of the context when it came to human contact if it didn't involve a syringe full of Z. "Sure thing, kid," Alex replied, then led the way off the alley and under a dripping awning out back of some fish market.
His eyebrows nearly disappeared past his goggles and he lost his smile. Denver was kind of confused, never before had a dealer of any kind done anything like this, they would have laughed in his face and spit at him by this point, or just ignored him which was usually how it went. Now a bit on edge he warily followed as she led into a very smelly area, he crinkled his nose and tried to ignore the combined reek of rotten fish and city.
She tucked back her trenchcoat, hiked up her plaid skirt a little to reach the thigh holster, and pulled out the zydrate gun. She didn't flash it around, but she knew he'd see it. He was watching for the glow, after all. "I guess this is what you're lookin' for?"
His eyes darkened in desire as he saw that sweet blue glow, his smirk spreading dangerously across his face. “Oh, that’s it. That’s what I’m looking for, you know me all too well girl. And we just met.”
"That's great," Alex replied, ready to slip a razor out of a different holster if she had to. "Pay me." And the gun went back into its holster. "I know you that well," she added with a wink.
He patted down his pockets again, forgetting that he still had it in hand. He tried not to look surprised when he found it, and turned casually giving a saccharine smile and purred, “So how much we talking ‘bout?”
How much was it that has-been necromerchant was charging his customers for a hit? Fifty? Forty-five? "Thirty," Alex replied, smooth as silk and smug as...well, something smug, anyway. "For you. 'Cause, you know, I like your face or somethin'."
He eagerly handed over the thirty, mildly surprised at the price, far better than what the other guy had charged him last. He was liking this new dealer better and better. “Mmm. I think I could love your face, I sure as hell ain’t gonna forget it.” It was more of a hope than a promise, there wasn’t much after a hit that he remembered.
She giggled then, and flicked a little card out of her pocket. Something Doll had told her to do, really, she hadn't had a lot of faith in it, but whatever. It was in black and white, and just had her name and a little photo on it. Nothing that would implicate her as anything other than some stupid wannabe popstar. She handed it over, snatched the money between her fingers, then put the gun against the exposed flesh of the junkie's neck. "Where do you like your shot?" she asked, the corner of her mouth quirking up a little. "I won't do your balls."
He took the card and pocketed it, smiling because a card, he knew, would keep his memory fresh of this one. The feel of the gun against his neck still sent shivers down his spine; he lifted his hand to guide the gun down to the base of his neck, just above his collar bone. “Here” he whispered.
"Alright," she replied, almost as hushed, and the gun went off in her hand. It almost took her by surprise. She watched the blue drain down as quick as a heartbeat, and watched for what always happened. The shudder, the sigh. The eyes rolled in the back of the head. Poetry. At least when she knew she could walk away.
His eyes initially widened flashing the mismatched colors before his pupils enlarged, engulfing everything in an inky black. His head lolled back as the drug hit him, he ushered forth a sigh. He happily slumped against the wall as he let the drug take him where it would.
Alex actually reached out and ruffled the guy’s dreads in a gesture that was almost affectionate. Then the gun went back into its holster, and she left the junkie there in the alleyway. She was an enabler, not a babysitter. Besides, he was fine and the night was young. She scampered off down the alley, over bricks and through puddles. She thought she might see someone she knew.
