log: Rick Jones and Dave Who: Rick Jones (that's Janis's daddy, you know) and David Samson What: Janis hasn't told her parents where she lives now. They think she's living with Dave or something, and it's kind of awkward for poor Dave. When: Tuesday, midday.
A mechanical voice, plain and slow.
You have .... one new message. First new message ... received July ...
Janis pulled the phone away from her ear. That voice creeps her out. She's brought back by her mother's voice.
"Hiiiiiii, sweetie. What's your new address? We were cleaning out the garage and found a few things you might need. Oh! And Dave's, do you have Dave's? Rick wants to give him a few things that belonged to Bruce. Sentimental bastard that he is. Ok! Kisses! Call me back!"
To reply to it, press 8.
"Hey mom, get a pencil ready. Here's my address." She recites the Academy's address. "That's Dave's too. I'll call you later when I have more time. Love you. Bye!"
Marlo smiles and hands the phone to Rick. Allowing him to listen to the message while she stands there looking like a cat with a stomach full of canary. Rick's brow knits, his lips plunge into a frown. "They're living together? Like roommates?"
"I hope not!" Marlo is tickled. She flits from the room, off to make a label for a big box of junk to send to her daughter.
Rick hits END on the phone. Then he holds it back up, squints at it. He scrolls through a menu of contacts and choses Dave's number from it.
"... no, sir. what I'm saying is that I can help you, but only if you're certain of your deposition. I know these things can get difficult and no one's saying you're lying, but if you're still willing to settle, then I don't think saying she 'stabbed you with a-" He looked down at the paperwork and frowned. "An axe. Eight times." He swiveled in his chair. "You see, the court's not going to be as forgiving as-" He heard the soft beep of an incoming call. "Okay, I know. Just sleep on it and let me know how you feel in the morning and we can proceed from there. Okay? Alright, sir. Thank you." Switching from one call to the next, he let out a deep breath and answered again, "David Samson, how can I help you?"
Rick's a nice guy. He's the nicest guy you'll meet! His voice is gruff when he addresses Dave, though, "David. What's you're address?" No hello, no 'what's up, mah boooy?'
Yeah, that is weird. "Hi, Uncle Rick," Dave says with wary cheerfulness. "Something up?" That requires his address?
Oops, don't scare him. "I have some stuff I wanted to send you. Really neat, you should get a kick out of it." He feels kind of awful, like he's tricking the poor boy.
"Oh," David shrugs verbally then recites his address for the man. "Or you could just send it to Mom and Dad, if it's a big package or something. What'd you find?" Oh, Uncle Rick has the best stuff.
"You're living with Janis?" Oh Janis, you tell your family next to nothing. "Some stuff, things that belonged to Bruce. You're living with Janis?" Just in case the question wasn't heard the first time.
The old one-two. "What- wait! What?" Dave is out of his chair for no good reason. "No, no... she lives down the hall- didn't she- wait. Hang on." Oh god, family drama. "Did she say something?'
"She told us her address and said it was yours too. Am I assuming?" You can hear a smile in his voice. "Calm down, Dave. It's all right. It's the whole Daddy thing. Unless... is there something she should be telling me?" Oh! Just when you thought it was over!
"Oh! Oh no! Oh- oh no no no." Dave says in a rush, catching on really fast or assuming the worst. "Wait, wait, can you hang on?" He doesn't wait for an answer, just puts the phone down and takes a deep breath, closing his eyes. A quick check of his pulse, he decides to lie down on the floor. A hand reaches up to continue the call from a prone position under his desk. Dark. Shady. Comfortable. Just relax. "No, no... she just works where I ... sort of wound up working- she didn't tell you about the job she got?" He sort of feels like a heel for telling her dad ahead of her.
"She's working at your office?" Janis has worked at a lot of places, but he didn't really think she'd get a job with Dave. Maybe he should call her ass up and ask her this stuff. This isn't adding up and Rick feels like Dave's hiding something! Oh man, what if he knocked her up? He's going to have to go find a shotgun. Dang.
"No, no," Dave says and puts a hand on his head. "She's working at the school- I'm sorry she didn't tell you..." Man, he feels like a heel. "I can- I can give you her number...?"
"I have her number!" Oh ho ho. What a hilarious misunderstanding. "Sorry, I had to call and shake you up. Expect a package, Davey!" Like water off a duck's back.
"Oh, yeah. Hey. Ha ha." His laugh is weak, his eyes are closed. "It was hilarious, Uncle Rick." A deep sigh. "Really, give her a call, there's all sorts of news."
"Every time Marlo calls her, it goes straight to voicemail." Clearly, they should just come visit her. "I'll talk to you later, kiddo."
