May 2nd Challenge
Just Brothers
Prompt: Mighty Ducks: TAS-Nosedive and Wildwing-They are really just typical brothers
Rating: G.
This is for the one who requested it. I'm glad there's another fan out there that remembers the Ducks.
It’s so strange to watch them, ya know? Especially now. The team just got back from fighting Dragaunus and the Saurians again... or was it Dr. Droid? After a while all the fights end up the same, the difference is in the injuries. See? Grin’s favoring his wrist so that means it was Siege he was going up against instead of one of Dr. Droid’s robots ‘cause even though they’re made of metal, Grin’s just that much tougher.
Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah. Those two. They’re so different, practically polar opposites, that it’s hard to believe they’re even able to get along as teammates let alone as brothers.
Wildwing and Nosedive.
Two more different people... er, ducks... I have never known. Wildwing is the Team Captain, by the book and a planner, ready to lead his people into battle either against Dragaunus or against the opposite team. Rarely does a goal get past him when he’s in the net, and rarely does he let them head into battle without him. I mean, this is the guy who willingly went hand to hand against the freakin’ Leader of the Saurians to give his team time to bug out the last time they were in the Raptor. Perfectly serious and the guardian of his entire team. That’s Wildwing. Probably has something to do with losing that buddy of his on the way here. I’m betting he made a promise to himself that no one else was going to be taken away from him and that’s why he goes out of his way to try and protect everyone.
Then you have Nosedive. Young, reckless, impulsive, hot head, and the apparent comedy relief. Despite that, he’s got a knack for weapons that’s almost scary and can drive or pilot anything with a few minutes of playing with the controls. He’s also one of the best forwards I’ve seen in my life, with his teammates being the others in that same category. He usually teams up with Grin when they’re out fighting. Yeah, the Chatter Box and the Silent Wall. But they make it work. A stranger would almost think that Grin and Nosedive were related with how well they get along instead of Wildwing and Nosedive.
But then, a stranger would never get the chance to see them like I do. A stranger would never see Wildwing look at his brother with concerned glances as Tanya doctored a cut on the younger duck’s back or the small smile Nosedive offered back, the one that said he was fine and they were still alive, still together. Nana Goldman use to smile at Pappy Goldman like that, especially around Hanukkah when Pappy would tell stories about the family lost to the Germans and their camps and his smile stretched thin with forced happiness. To think that those two not only survived the slave camps, but found each other again is remarkable.
The fact that neither broke under the yoke of the Saurians is just plain miraculous.
Oh sure, there are shadows in their eyes and restless nights when the demons press a bit closer, but then everyone on that team has those. Their entire *planet* was conquered, not just some piddly country that they could escape from if given the time and a few resources.
“Yo Wing! Since Dinobreath’s gonna be out of commission for a while, I was thinkin’ bout grabbing a movie,” Nosedive called, a grin stretched across his beak. “Interested?”
“Sure, Dive, but you’re paying for popcorn this time,” agreed Wildwing, smiling as Nosedive started crowing about the latest action flick they were going to see.
Despite everything else, soldiers, survivors, hockey players, Wildwing and Nosedive were really just typical brothers.
And I was glad I was close enough to them to see that.
