Christian Hoffmann von Hoffmannswaldau
(1616-1679) was born in Breslau (now Wroclaw, in Poland) to a wealthy family. He studied in the Netherlands and travelled extensively before coming back home, marrying a girl both wealthy and noble, and making a very impressive career as mayor of his town and then governor of the province. He wrote a lot, mostly religious poems that were printed while he was still alive, but also a certain number of naughty poems that were copied by hand and then circulated very discreetly in knowing circles. This one is an example of the latter.

Jesting Song As Venus recently used to sit Naked and unveiled in the bath And with Cupid on her lap Eating from the tender sweets She showed the little boy Everything that women have. He saw the marble mounds Standing erect from arousal And told his mother in a loud voice: “When shall I get the same, So that the shepherdesses And the ladies like me as well?” Venus shook with laughter At her little son For she saw and already noted That he understood something of it. She said: “But you do have other things That people can love even more!” Meanwhile she let his hand Play upon her breast For she perceived that he Desired to feel further Until the little one arrived at last To her soft legs. As he nestled against her He said: “Dear little mother, Who took your fat leg And inflicted a wound instead! Must all the women on this earth Be wounded so?” Here Venus could say nothing Other than: “You little wretch, Go away, you shouldn’t Ask about this kind of thing! Wounds inflicted by love’s arrow Are not meant to be healed!” |
