Names. Names had been about the only thing that they’d been able to extract in further interrogations at the prison. There had been little details available about how or why these breakouts were happening, little information existed about who might be providing the opportunity for the prisons to escape. All they had was a roll of names of people who had vanished that was far too extensive for Terence’s comfort. He hadn’t stopped pacing since they had reached Vance’s office. All of the paperwork for their interviews was stacked up on his desk, and Terence could only assume that his reaction wasn’t going to be the best. The department had hit walls before, but this… This was far worst than some random asshole smuggler who kept taunting them from the shadows. This was the makings of another War. Higgs was pacing, Katie was leaning against the wall tapping her left-hand fingers against her right forearm. The lack of information was bugging her, and she didn't like any of this. "Think he'll give us more manpower?" Katie asked after a few moments of silence. They needed it. As much as she didn't want to admit to it, they needed it. “He’ll have to,” Terence said. He’d been trying to parse out exactly how they could tackle this by themselves, and there was just no way. Even with just the family, there were far too many people to be interviewed for just two people to manage it in any reasonable span of time. “This is way too time sensitive to just have two people trying to tackle everything all at once.” The door of the office opened and Lionel Vance entered with a particular rush in his step. He looked more worn than usual and the lack of sleep around his eyes was prominent. He glanced at the two aurors and nodded in greeting, but didn’t say anything as he took the time to place his hat and dark blue blazer on the coat rack. He loosened his tie and began rolling up his sleeves as he made his way to his desk. “Alright,” he started. “I’ve gone through most of this multiple times.” His hand motioned to the stacks of interviews and reports the two had brought back from Azkaban. He didn’t sit, however, as his hands came to his waist. “As of last night the Minister has agreed to buy us a week, maybe two, before they make a statement about Governor Entwistle’s forced leave and internal investigation. That gives us a garunteed week to sort out two things. Locating where the escaped felons are and how they got out so it can’t happen again. Ideas?” He looked between Auror Bell and Auror Higgs expectantly. A week? A week? Terence wanted to just gape at him, his mind refusing to accept the parameters that had been sent. How in the fuck were they supposed to manage that? He managed to keep his features straight, though, as he leveled Vance with a skeptical look, “Sure, boss. No big deal. We’ll just capture a dozen dangerous escaped felons and patch up all the issues in Azkaban’s security in the same number of days it usually takes to set up an op. No problem.” All right, maybe the sarcasm wasn’t really necessary. But it made Terence feel better. “Someone helped them,” Terence said after sighing. “That’s the only way any of this could have worked. We’re going to have to sort through everyone who might have had a part in this. That means family members, friends, colleagues, acquaintances… Anyone that might have been capable of this.” “This has to be low profile investigating,” Vance countered the path of work Terence’s laid out. “Given that there’s probable cause for Entwhistle to be involved, we’re unable to guarantee how far down the rabbit hole this goes. We have a week to get our footing -- not exactly solve all of of it -- but get a damn good idea what and who we’re messing with before the Minister’s office makes an official announcement and things get more complicated.” “We’re not going to be able to get through all of those interviews on our own.” Terence countered. “He’s right, we need more manpower,” Katie agreed having let Terence do most the talking thus far. Vance finally sat down and heaved a sigh, “Start with family members who wouldn’t be all too excited to have the escapee’s out and about. Use DWPA interviews on file to determine your list. And you can have two more aurors -- but only the ones you trust. No one else - not even Potter needs to know what you’re working on. As far as anyone’s concerned you’re reporting directly to me till further notice.” “He's not going to like that,” Terence said. Those words from anyone else would have meant concern, but the smile on Terence's face betrayed the face that he was delighted by the prospect of pissing Potter off. “Yeah well, he’ll get over it,” Vance seemed unimpressed by the prospect of pissing of the Head of the Auror Department. “After the mess he made of that march last month - he’s the least of our worries.” Katie’s expression stayed neutral. She wasn’t nearly as comfortable with leaving Harry out of it, but she sure as hell didn't show it in that moment. "Well, we better get to it." “I'll grab Pen, and you go and get Phil,” Terence said, turning his attention to Katie. “We can grab one of the interrogation rooms and debrief them there. It shouldn't take too long to cover the basics, and then we can dive into sorting out the logistics of who's tackling what.” Nodding, Katie glanced to Vance to make sure they were dismissed first before making a move. “As discrete as possible,” the man made eye contact with Katie as if giving her a nod of approval to stress the delicacy needed to handle the very sensitive information they had to work with. Terence couldn’t help the vague amusement that crossed his features at Vance’s emphasis to Katie. Sometimes it didn’t hurt to have the reputation of being the competent and levelheaded part of the department even if it wasn’t always entirely true. |
