breaking up is hard to do
"I hear we're regressing." The woman sitting across from Jackie Goldstein snorted. "Listening to gossip, doc?" she added with a snide tone. Her therapist raised an eyebrow. "You think you're the only one who'd rather talk about anyone else in their sessions? Yours is just one in a string of dramatic tales I've been hearing about." With a frown, Corrine shifted in her seat and crossed her arms over her chest. "My supposed drama is my own. Folks should learn to shut up if they don't want to talk about themselves." "Like you?" Jackie asked, a hint of amusement in his voice. She narrowed her eyes at him. "I always cooperate, don't I?" He nodded, but then gave her a pointed look. Corrine stared back for a moment, before shifting in her seat once more. She leaned to the right, propping her elbow on the arm-rest as she moved her chin to rest on braced fingers. "I assume you're talking about Kenny? Relationships end, Goldstein. It's not that big a deal." "What happened?" There was a moment of silence before she sighed and shrugged. "We wanted different things." Jackie frowned as he made some notes on the pad in his lap. "You liked him," he observed as he wrote. "Yeah, well... I don't want to get married, so..." She drifted off, letting him connect the dots without further explanation. "Did you tell him that?" With another snort, Corinne gave her therapist a knowing look. "I think the break-up was a good clue." Shaking his head, Jackie made another note. "Breaking up and getting married aren't your only options, Cori." "Why string him along when I can't give him what he wants?" Cori asked in defense of her choice. "How do you know what he wants if you didn't talk to him?" Straightening, Corrine gestured with the hand that had been holding her chin as she spoke. "Oh, come on! You don't ask someone to marry you if you don't want to get married." It was Jackie's turn to snort. "It's the natural progression of things. While less expected than it used to be, most people do marry eventually. And he may very well have asked you based on the assumption that you were like most people, at least in that regard." Her chin raised defensively as she replied, "If that were true, he shouldn't have assumed, then." "Indeed," Jackie agreed. "But I can't speak to his lack of communication skills as he is not my patient. I can only encourage you to use yours." |
