Penny left Terence to his research, making her way to Potter's office. There was no way she was letting her partner handle this part. Terence could barely mask his disdain for their boss on the best of days. She didn't need him picking a fight. No matter any personal feelings, Potter was their boss. And she was better at pretending to be respectful. She knocked on the door to announce her presence, then stepped in. "Do you have a minute, sir?" Harry Potter had sat up quickly in his chair as he held the receiver of his wi-phone to his ear. He motioned for Penelope to enter the office as he finished off his conversation, "Yeah, I’ll be home for dinner-- Yes I’m serious. Love I have to go-- Okay--- Yep--- Love you, bye." A sort of grin was present when he turned his attention to the auror before him. "Sorry. What can I do for you, Clearwater?" he asked. Penny paid no attention to the conversation between Potter and his wife - she assumed it was his wife anyway - waiting until he addressed her and checking her notes. "Higgs and I got an anonymous tip with regard to the Gudgeon case," she said. "We think that it is worth checking out and possibly setting up a stakeout." "Yeah? Where and how long? Why'd the tip seem legitimate?" Potter leaned forward over his desk with interest. The look on his face, however, screamed 'impress me.' "The voice sounded like an associate of Gudgeon's," Penny said, focusing on the important part, even as part of her was irritated by her boss's general demeanor. "Higgs is looking into it right now. But it looks like there will be a large shipment of illegal magical creatures coming to a warehouse in Nation Alley sometime between the twenty-third and twenty-seventh. According to our informant, Gudgeon is involved. He has had dealings in Nation Alley in the past, so it's not hard to believe. I know it isn't his usual sort of activity, but it's possible he is branching out. That or the creatures have some connection to his drug trade. But even if it turns out that he isn't involved, magical creature smuggling is hardly something we should overlook." Potter nodded as Penny read off the facts. He inhaled a breath then bit his lower lip, his eyes narrowing at the suggestion that a known drug dealer was dealing in magical creatures. "What sort of drug dealer…." he closed his eyes and shook his head, "Nevermind, it's not important. Do what you need to--" He leaned forward and grabbed a notepad of pre-designed order forms. Scribbling in Higgs and Clearwater's name he circled and checked the appropriate boxes. Ripping the Ministry memo from it’s perforated tablet, he handed it over. "Just catch him this time, yeah?" There were moments when Penny really wondered how Potter had ever become head of the Auror Office. Well, besides the obvious. Really, she wondered how he had kept the job. Acquiring a position through blatant favoritism was one thing, but someone had to have noticed by now he wasn't a terribly good leader. But it was no matter. Maybe Terence was a bad influence on her, but she gave her boss a pointedly unimpressed look as she spoke. "Well, sir," she said dryly, "we had planned on slacking off and allowing him to escape, but if that is what you want, I suppose we can do our jobs and catch him." Harry Potter's brow raised at the sarcasm, but the grin on his face wasn't easily masked by any sort of retaliation in expression. Instead he countered with a dry, "Funny-- get out of here, Clearwater. Reports on my desk every evening you lot follow the lead." Penny nodded, suppressing a smile as she did so. "Yes, sir." Turning on her heels, she headed back to her desk. Terence would want to hear about this. |
