The swaying feeling and ringing ears wouldn’t stop. The throbbing pain overwhelming the left side of her face wouldn’t stop. The feeling of it double and tripling inside. She felt her cheek was huge as it began to swell under the bruising. Her eye damaged had finally swollen shut.
Once through the arch and out into the path she stumbled passed the hedge and rested against it nervously. Finally she vomited. As if her body was saying finally we can stop for a moment. But she could not stop for long. She doubted Cobalt had followed her but someone else would have. Others would be coming and she was in no shape to fight them. Yanking open her bag she saw toilet paper. Immediately she tugged some free shoving it to her nose. “Okay body, we need to move.”
Teff had luckily seen the back of Flux's head when she was racing away. He looked wide eyed and confused at Honey's demise before the entire thing even happened, but he slung his bat over his shoulder and tucked the baseball in a pocket before bounding off. He was able to catch up to her quickly with his long, loping gait.
He rounded the archway and down the path, stopping short of Flux when she vomited. He stayed quiet until she seemed a little more together, "Miss Flux?" He put his hands up in case she reacted, "It's Teff! It's me!"
Flux turned her head quickly, which made her feel even worse. With her bat firmly in her hand she got ready to swing again. When she made the connection between Teff and not danger she slowly lowered the bat. “Oh thank god. Hi.” Flux then realized how ridiculous she must look. Toilet paper sticking out of her nose and her face probably ballooning in size. “Can we find a safe place to sit down for a bit?”
"Yes'm," Teff relaxed when she lowered the bat. It was almost like he was easily cowed by a girl who might've been half his size. He offered Flux his arm to lean on, "Lemme help ya. I'll find us somewhere to rest. Gotta do somethin bout how big your face is gettin. You look like you headbutted a hornet's nest."
“Thank you,” she said with relief. Knowing that in this state she was going to have Teff around to help her out. Flux took his offer of an arm to lean on as they started to walk. “Yeah, it feels more like I was hit in the face with a metal pipe.” Flux awkwardly laughed, but it hurt causing a pained sound to follow. Would her mentors be able to send her anything? She had no idea about Data’s state, could he need something more?
Teff wrinkled his nose at the thought. Now who would even try to hurt Miss Flux like that? Well, everyone else, likely, he remembered that they were all supposed to be killing each other. He looked around carefully trying to find a place for them to go that'd be remotely safe, perking up when he saw the guard house's stone walls. "Don't worry, Miss Flux. I'll keep you safe," Teff promised as he helped her towards the guard house, "Don't worry one bit."
Miss Flux, that was strangely reassuring and comforting, Nobody but Teff had ever called her that. Was it a custom from District Eleven she wondered. “Thank you.” She said again. When Flux saw the guard house she perked up. The ringing had stopped, but the pounding in her head continued furiously. The sick filling was lingering as well and when they finally made it up to the guardhouse gate she grasped onto it her hand and pulled. It stuck for a second, was it locked? She tugged again and it creaked open.
“Home sweet home.” She made a weak attempt at a laugh.
Teff whooped a happy cheer when the gate door open before he held it open for Flux, "Ladies first." His mama is gonna be really proud he remembered his manners on tv. He followed behind to shut the gate behind them, trying to be quiet about it in case they were being followed. Teff exhaled and then smiled at Flux, "We're good for now! You should do somethin about your face. It's bleedin again."
Teff was such a gentleman. Flux wasn’t sure if she had ever really experienced that. As she entered she plopped herself down on the ground. “Oh crap,” Flux grumbled placing her bat down and opening the pack again. Flux pulled out a roll of tissue and pulled off another to fault the bleeding. “At least I got something right.” She peered into the bag and found more, “Beef jerky, cookies, and a full canteen. Oh and a compass.” Well it would be nice to know where she was, but she was most excited about the food and water. Too bad there was nothing for pain.
Sitting down across from her, Teff sighed and put his bat down and the ball. "Didn't get anythin but this," he gestured to the items in front of him. "After Miss Honey died, I just grabbed and left. Least I got a weapon?"
“Maybe I should have just stuck with the weapon.” Flux sighed. Right now she wouldn’t have a smashed in face and she’d be able to see out of both eyes. The swaying feeling was slowly passing. Pulling out the canteen she had a small sip and passed it over to Teff. “Was M…” she paused feeling saying Miss Honey might be offensive. “Was Honey involved in the explosion I didn’t see it.” Flux had only heard it. Had Honey stepped off too soon?
Teff nodded his head a little in thanks as he took hold of the canteen. He took a sip before he answered as he handed it back to Flux, "One of the other district boys stepped off. He blew up and took Miss Honey with him." He shook his head like he was just passing news of sad town gossip. "Poor gal. Didn't even get a chance."
Clearing his throat, he looked around the guardhouse for a moment to compose himself. With an attempt at a smile, "Think we can hunker down here for a bit. Don't wanna do much explorin today while people still ready for a tussle."
“Oh shit, yeah, that sucks. I’m sorry.” Flux wasn’t sure if he knew his district partner. She had no idea how big or small district eleven was.
As she tightened the lid of the canteen she plopped it in her pack. “I like the sound of just staying here, just don’t let me fall asleep for a while. Not sure of the head damage at the moment.” Flux liked his plan, staying here and wait for the thrill of the start to pass.
