Summary: An estate sale proves to be most ... profitable
Status: Complete
Icetenari had obtained several items of value from the sale, two of which she'd already bartered for books she'd been itching to get her hands on that had been dangled tauntingly over her head. While it was useful to know her father's contacts, some of them were utter pains in the arse and she felt they tried to barter more harshly with her because she was young.
Or because she was female.
Either way, they'd learned quick enough she wasn't a fool and she'd made a bit of a name for herself in certain circles. Yes, relation to her father helped, but she was doing well on her own. She was careful to research each item, to pursue only those that were not only worth something, but could be moved easily. It made no sense to have a very valuable object if no one would touch it.
But then, everyone had their flaws, and their guilty pleasures. There were unique items that she would never use, that she likely couldn't move, that she wanted simply to say she had. One such item had shown up at the estate sale. She'd had very few competitors in the bidding, but she hadn't been surprised. She reasoned the others thought she didn't know what she was bidding on - because it was just a bit mad to want it in ones possession.
For what it was, she'd gotten it for a song. It was an object, very dark, very powerful, and no one knew precisely what it did - aside from drive people mad. Ice reasoned the true meaning, the true magic had been lost over the centuries, and she thought that perhaps it no longer served its original purpose - whatever that purpose had been.
There wasn't much written about it, no matter how far back she dug, no matter how many languages she searched in ... but she thought she'd like to try to find out what it did. What it was. What it had originally been meant for.
The heavy wooden box was laden with wards, with safeguards. There were two locks on it, but both keys had come with the box. Unraveling the wards was going to take a dog's age, but she didn't mind the challenge ... because she was very eager to get to what was inside.
After everything else had been put away, Ice drew the recently returned heavy book from her shelf, and settled down at her desk to cross-reference the item by all the known names, starting with the Chimes of Insanity and moving back from there.
