Nathaniel stared down at the immaculate top of his desk and strongly considered thumping his head down on it several times. Only the fact that he really didn’t yet another headache stopped him. He, liked everyone else in the Department of Mysteries, had been working overtime and then some on this returned dead thing and they weren’t really getting very far. They knew the pattern and the arithmancers were working more on that but without actually being able to see the amulet or know its provenance they were essentially working with their hands tied.
But that wasn’t really Nate’s problem at the moment. His problem was that he couldn’t find any record of anything like this being mentioned in any prophecy. He was discounting the reports of a couple of school girls seeing something because they hadn’t reported it at the time and there was no point asking them questions now. It was far too late. The human mind was remarkably predictable in some ways, especially with young girls. It didn’t matter what they’d seen at the time, their minds would have altered it by now due to current events, not to mention their own prejudices and biases. There was a reason why proper Seers reported visions to Ministry immediately.
But he refused to believe that no one else had seen this. It was too big. If the dead had been insignificant then maybe he could understand it but Dumbledore and Voldemort returning were hardly what anyone could call insignificant. He could not convince himself that there was nothing in the archives.
Unfortunately his searches so far had turned up nothing. This wasn’t discouraging for him, at least not in terms of his theory. He’d only been searching prophecies made in the last fifty years and he still hadn’t gone through all of them. Perhaps he needed to expand his horizons and look further back? They had thousands of prophecies here after all, many of which hadn’t come true.
But there was a large subsection of prophecies that had been made and were unable to be verified. By that, they meant that the Unspeakables of the time couldn’t identify any of the participants nor could they attach any kind of date reference to the prophecy. Now if it had been one of those kinds of prophecies then it could have been made at any time. In fact, that would almost demand that the prophecy had been made well before Albus Dumbledore had been born since prophecies were often updated if the person they were about was identified.
He felt a surge of renewed vigour flow through him and he grinned. That was better: an actual plan of attack. He got to his feet and headed for the Hall of Prophecy and the enormous record books that had become his best friends these couple of weeks. Now that he had a plan, he was going to put it into action.
