Jayden was not used to awkward situations. Usually, he allowed everything to roll off of him. And even if things were headed down the road toward awkwardness, he would usually change directions with a joke or a tease. Now, being out of his element, he felt uncomfortable. Hearing Olivia's apology led him to sigh, his guilt getting the better of him. Jayden had hoped that their afternoon would make her feel better about all the drama at school, but he seemed to be failing.
"I always thought school was dull, too. But now I actually miss it," he told her with a shrug. His music still played in the background, nearly inaudible, and he tapped his finger on the steering wheel to the beat.
"I'm afraid, as interesting as I usually am, I don't have much to report. I've had a lot going on between work and marriage and moving out of my apartment - I haven't had any time for excitement."
Rounding a corner, he asked her, "What is your major?" He had never thought to ask before.
