Jayden Tanaka had not been on a proper date in years. Dating, as he had told Madeleine when they met at the pub, was something that he had given up. He claimed that his reasoning revolved around the Fruitful Law, but he wasn't being completely honest. True, dating while he could be assigned a wife at any given moment wasn't the easiest thing to do, but in reality, he quit dating when he realized that he had gone through five women in the course of a year. No matter what he did, he couldn't seem to hold on to a relationship. This fact made him incredibly sad, especially since the last thing he wanted to do was a break someone's heart. He took extreme precaution to make sure each woman he dated felt special and cared for, because he never wanted anyone to feel used - and he never wanted to use anyone. Unfortunately, these arrangements often led to bigger breakups and more painful heartaches. Though he had never seen a psychologist, Jayden was pretty sure most of this was rooted in his youth and his perception of his parents' relationship. He also felt guilty because he knew that he loved attention, and that played a part as well. Jayden stopped dating as a result, no longer wanting to leave heartache in his wake.
He mulled these thoughts over in his head as he drove, getting closer to Madeleine's home. Despite all his past attempts, he couldn't help but feel a little excited at the prospect of a date. Especially a date with a very articulate woman, who was unafraid of voicing and defending her views. It couldn't hurt to try and see where it led - at least that is what he believed.
The neighborhoods he passed began to look more and more wealthy, which was unsurprising, as he was getting closer and closer to the beach. Seafront homes were always expensive. He finally located her house, which wasn't the cozy one-bedroom he had imagined. It was large - too large for one woman, in Jayden's opinion. And without a doubt, it had to be one of the most expensive houses in that area. Jayden, as a mechanical engineer, made a pretty decent salary, but he certainly could not afford a home like that one. Madeleine's family had to be wealthy. Her reasoning behind not working seemed sound to him, but he couldn't help but think that not needing to work played a part. He guessed that Madeleine was not used to fending for herself.
However, that couldn't damper his mood. He didn't bother to think on any of it too deeply. Dating was about having fun, getting to know someone, and enjoying the company. All he had planned was a nice dinner at The Red Apple. Nothing else.
He stepped out of his car, walked up to her door, and rang the bell. He could hear it echo throughout her house.
