Dani could feel the butterflies getting restless in her stomach as she pulled up to the townhouse. She'd been here before, of course but it had been different that time. That time, she had taken note of the nearby beach (very, very nearby; practically visible) and how nice the apartment looked from the outside (brightly colored, a lot of glass and modern-looking architecture), especially for the rent (very reasonable if split evenly between two people, which it would be). She'd liked how bright the townhouse was, how much daylight filtered through the windows, how boldly the walls were decorated, so unlike anywhere she'd lived before. She'd just sat in the kitchen and discussed everything she could think to discuss with ZuuZuu. That had been a meeting of appraisal.
This time, however? This time she was bringing her whole life with her. To stay. With no visible end in sight. Moving to her dorm in IU was a temporary thing, like sleepaway camp, only for four years. Lodging with Liz and her husband had felt mostly like going home, where Liz had run most everything anyways. Even the sidewalk looked a little different here, she noted as she stepped out of the car and around to the back, to open the trunk. It was lighter, especially without any grass nearby crowding it.
She'd brought two bags: a huge suitcase for clothing and necessities, and a cardboard box for books and whatever miscellany she could come up with. The townhouse was ready-furnished, and she'd never had an especially large wardrobe. Sighing impatiently (with herself, mostly: she'd made this decision already), she reached for both at once - not a good idea, it turned out, as both bags were definitely two-handed jobs. Instead she just took the suitcase and made her way up, through the gate, to the front door of 976 Callis Street. Had there always been so much glass? It impressed her again, even more than it had the last time she’d been here. Even the door was mostly glass, privacy only maintained by a thick white curtain inside.
She raised her hand to ring the doorbell, and instantly new insecurities floated to the surface. What if she and ZuuZuu didn’t get along well, living together? Sure, they’d gotten along great in college, but living with a person changed things, gave a person a different point of view. What if Dani committed some unspeakable faux-pas? What if they’d just been raised in such different households that ZuuZuu found her, Dani didn’t know, intrusive or something?
Swallowing her nerves and scolding the butterflies, she rang.
