"It's nice to see someone with so much ambition!" John exclaimed. He was beginning to think of Miss Berg less as a student and more as an equal. Judging by the way she talked about Arithmancy, she surely hadn't missed anything in the class periods she'd been absent for and would have no trouble catching up. He had already decided that anything he could do to help her get ahead, he would do.
"So tell me something, do you have any practical experience?" he asked, trying to gauge the correct level she was at, in hopes that even as an advanced student she would still be able to take something away from his class.
"You know what? Let me just put it to you as plain as I can," John said, leaning forward in his seat, making a valiant effort to curb his enthusiasm, knowing that he tended to forget breathing when he was excited. "I want you to learn as much as you can in this class, not just for NEWT purposes, but for life after NEWTs. So tell me what you want to learn. Is there anything in particular you would like to explore, aside from the applications with Runic magic? Maybe your exuberance for the subject will help draw some interest from your other classmates."
"Also, assuming you can pass a practical exam, I would have no problems with allowing you to work at an advanced level, apart from your peers. That way, you wouldn't be expected to do the assignments you are missing during the class periods you're skipping, as I'm sure you'll find them trivial and not challenging in the least, and can work on special assignments that should prove more difficult and enriching."
