“No limitations were mentioned,” Maja agreed, somewhat absently; there were little wisps of light blinking about in the forest, and she was trying to figure out what they were. “You should certainly take advantage of his desperation.”
She could, of course, have handed Gerard one of her own cigarettes, but watching Gerard plead was amusing, and it had been a long time since she had had someone to laugh at. Next to her, Gerard was looking hopeful and tired and stupidly pathetic, and if she had known him just a little better (if he had been one of her teammates) she would have reached out and touched his shoulder, would have promised him a cigarette and made him hunt for it, would have tried to tease him out of the weariness weighing down his shoulders.
As it was, she just grinned at him and went back to staring at the forest. The lights were moving closer, winking in and out against the dark of the tree, niggling at her attention. Clambering to her feet, she moved to the edge of the roof, trying to get a better view.
