Need to Run
Who: Jane Shepard and Charles Gunn
Where: Devron Building, Gym
When: Monday, March 2nd
What: Getting to know each other
Status: Log, Complete
After the battle for the Citadel Knowhere Shepard had taken time trying to collect herself for a new battle and so, six weeks later, it should come as no surprise that she was in the Devron Building's gym running on the treadmill. She wasn't proud of how she'd acted during battle. So... she ran. She ran hard.
Shepard wasn't the only one feeling the need to move. Gunn had been preparing for what was supposed to be the battle to end all battles when he got here, and it was like he couldn't turn off that keyed up feeling, even after going through a real battle. He was just hoping that doing some running would help for now. It wasn't the first time he'd been to the gym to try and chill for a while, and it wouldn't be the last.
When he walked in, he gave a quick nod to Shepard before taking the treadmill beside her.
"You're getting to be a familiar face," she said conversationally. Shepard was starting to build up a sweat, but her breathing was steady and even.
"Gotta do something around here during the less insane days," Gunn joked as he started up the machine, starting off with a light jog to warm up.
Shepard chuckled and upped her speed a little. She had pretty good endurance, but that was what happened when you exercised all the damn time on your "off" days. "It seems like there's a new face here every day. At least Knowhere seems to have the infrastructure to handle it." It was no Citadel, but it was still impressive.
"It's a good thing this place can handle the new faces, or else I'd be worried that it would explode at the seems," Gunn commented. This place seemed like it was always getting someone new and interesting.
"I'm surprised that there aren't many conflicts among the people here." She thought about that for a moment. "Or at least none that I've seen anyway."
Gunn chuckled under his breath when she said that. "I'm sure that it'll only be a matter of time. You stick so many people in a confined space and some are bound to get on each other's nerves after a while."
"And believe me, I've had experience with that," Shepard replied. She moved her mouth to one side as she realized how that sounded. "On a ship, to be clear. Not prison."
He just laughed when she added that caveat. "Wouldn't have taken you for the prison type, but I know that looks can be deceiving, too." He'd learned that years ago with his first run in with a vampire on the streets.
Shepard smiled. Very few people got to see her comedic side within minutes of speaking to her. Either she was in a good mood or he'd made a good first impression. Probably both. "Shepard," she introduced herself. If it weren't for the pace that they'd already set she'd stop and offer to shake his hand. Maybe later.
Well, Gunn would certainly hope he'd at least made a good first impression. "Gunn," he said back to her. They could shake hands later. "Definitely nice to meet someone around here who thinks along the same lines."
"I imagine it would be utter chaos here if it weren't for a few level heads." While an amusing thought, Shepard quite liked the status quo here. "What did you do back on your home world?"
"Yeah, but I'm almost positive that could be said for anywhere." Gunn knew that the last few years of his life had been utterly crazy. "Back home? I was a demon hunter turned lawyer." Which sounded like the biggest career jump in the world, now that he thought about it.
"Just when I thought I'd heard of everything," Shepard replied dryly. Then again, there were giant sentient ships back where she'd come from that were hellbent on destroying organic life, so... "which did you prefer?"
"I learned a long time ago to never think that you've heard it all," Gunn joked. Probably around the time he met Angel and found one decent vampire out there. (Spike became two later.) "Demon hunting was a far more honest job. You knew the risks going in." He'd hurt people as a lawyer in ways he'd never expected. "What about you? What did you do before coming here?"
"I imagine being a lawyer wouldn't be nearly as straightforward," Shepard replied. She grabbed her water bottle and had a swig, even as she continued running. "I was a Commander back home. And we were fighting giant sentient spaceships hellbent on destroying organic life. Fun times," she said dryly.
"You have no idea." Working at Wolfram & Hart just made it a million times worse. "And, despite the ships hellbent on destroying all organic life, that still sounds pretty cool," he admitted, laughing as he picked up his own pace.
Shepard laughed as well. "I made a few friends that I wouldn't have made otherwise. And I met someone who... yeah. My life was nice. Apart from the constant fighting. But I imagine that you get that."
He nodded. "Yeah, I definitely get that," he admitted. "I can at least say that the fighting keeps things interesting," he said with a laugh.
"It does break up the days," Shepard agreed, smiling. While they'd come from completely different universes, worlds and backgrounds, and fought different monsters - they really weren't all too dissimilar, were they? "Have you found your way around Freedomtown alright?" It was a remarkably big place, after all.
Kinda random that the two of them did wind up being alike, huh? "So far, so good. This place is huge, but it's been kind of fun having to explore it," Gunn said. "What about you?"
"Something tells me that it would take me months before I see everything," Shepard replied, expression softening as she thought about something. "I do feel guilty for not speaking to more people."
"If just months," Gunn remarked with a smirk, picking up his pace to a jog. "And you can always talk to more people. I think that's what the board thing is for, after all."
"That's true," she agreed, nodding. "And I have met you, Gunn. You don't seem all that bad," she joked, giving him a lopsided grin.
He smiled back at her. "Well, I do try," he said to her. "Besides, you're not so bad yourself."
