Angela's Heartbreak
Who: Angela and Shepard
Where: Angela and Aurora's apartment
What: A break up
When: Thursday, March 12th (after this scene)
Status: Log, Complete
While Angela might not be the most socially talented person onboard Knowhere, she was not stupid. Nor was she blind. Ever since Liara had appeared, it had been easy to tell where the majority of Jane Shepard's thoughts were. While the warrior goddess knew, deep down, that Jane meant nothing by it, and wasn't TRYING to hurt Angela... it still hurt nonetheless. Especially considering that Angela's first thought (simply killing the person who was trying to take what was hers) likely would NOT go over well with anyone here.
So... that meant taking care of things the more traditional way: talking.
Ugh.
After sending a few messages back and forth with the other woman, Angela sat quietly on her bed to wait, pulling her knees to her chest and sitting almost eerily still.
After messaging Angela on the network and arranging to meet, Shepard did her best to get to Angela's apartment as quickly as she could. Military life had made her prompt, at least. Steeling herself and taking in a breath, Shepard knocked on the front door. She could guess why Angela wanted to talk, but that didn't make her in any way prepared for the conversation.
"Enter." Angela said curtly, forever blunt and to-the-point. Any sign of the emotional thawing that the redhead had seemed to be doing since meeting Jane was gone... the ice-cold warrior seemed back in full force. Now... most people? Would lead into this. Prepare the other person. Well... other people? Were not Aldrif Odinsdottir of Asgard, thanksabunch. "I see that your lover has returned. I would venture to guess that my time in that role has come to an end?"
Shepard entered the apartment, closing the door with a gentle click behind her. She was used to Angela's blunt nature... and wasn't immune to the coldness of her tone. "I wouldn't speak so derogatorily about our relationship," she said with a light frown, crossing her arms under her breasts. "The time that we've spent together... don't think that I'm throwing that away, that it's some disposable thing to me. It did and does mean something to me."
"And there lies the crux of our situation." Angela stated, the pain of knowing in her heart what was going to happen evident even though she tried to hide it behind a cold stare. "Our time together means something to you... as does your time with her. But which means MORE to you?" She sighed, shaking her head. "You.... do not have to answer that if you would rather not. I suspect we both know the answer to that question."
"Liara and I have been together for a long time. I had every intention of..." Shepard trailed off. Sometimes the best thing to do was not go into detail. She sighed and dragged a hand through her hair. "I never wanted to hurt you, Angela."
"So... you're saying our time together is at an end." Angela said, trying like hell to keep that strong, cold tone to her voice, but ultimately failing. "If... she is what you need to be happy... if you need her more than you need me... it would be wrong of me to ask you to stay."
Well, Shepard felt like a complete ass right now. She knelt down in front of Angela and set her hands on her knees. "She and I work better when we're together," she tried to explain. She knew that she was twisting the knife, but there couldn't be any room for misinterpretation, either. "And I hope that one day you and I could be friends... but I understand if you couldn't." She frowned. She didn't like the thought, but she had to do what was best for Angela to move on, ultimately.
"Have no fear. You and I shall always have a connection, Lieutenant. Enjoy whatever time Liara and yourself have here... knowing that I will be watching over you both, ensuring neither of you come to any harm" Angela knew, right then, that she had NO interest in doing this again. This heartbreak shit? Was for the birds, thanks.
"Thank you. ... You have every right not to be so... gracious." Shepard had admittedly expected more anger and death threats, but it was almost like Angela had shut down her emotions. Or tried to, anyway.
Oh yes. There was MUCH compartmentalization going on within Angela. More than likely she'd travel into space and kill something. And kill it HARD. "This is not me being gracious, Lieutenant. This is me putting you both under my protection so that I don't end up trying to destroy her."
Shepard had to bite back a surprised laugh at that. She stood slowly. "And I thank you for that." She would probably have to talk to Liara about Angela, but one thing at a time.
"I do not wish to act impulsively, nor do something both of us will regret." Angela said with a resigned sigh, sad eyes betraying her as she tried to hide how devastating this was for her. She stood, grabbing Jane and bringing her in for one last, passionate kiss. After forcing herself to pull away, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes. "Now. Go. Be with the one you love."
Shepard admittedly needed a minute to compose herself after that kiss. And another for that look in Angela's eyes. She brushed a hand over Angela's hair and sighed. "You are a good woman, Angela. And I truly do wish you all the happiness in the world." She placed a tender kiss to Angela's forehead, then turned and walked away.
