If there ever was a night Buffy needed to slay, it was now. She mindlessly patrolled all her old routes in Sunnydale just wishing there were actually some demons or vamps she could pummel. She was always better at punching out her feelings than talking about them. She was being stupid, and she knew it. But she couldn't seem to help herself. She remembered all the problems she'd had when Faith had shown up in her life the first time. Feeling excluded, replaced, and left behind as everyone in her life crowded around to get to know the shiny new slayer. She and Faith had long-since put their issues to bed. But with the arrival of this new Faith, somehow things were even worse. She'd never been brought back in Faith's timeline. And after everything Faith had said, Buffy couldn't shake the feeling that the world would have been better off without her. Giles was happy and married to Ms Calender. They even had a baby. And Dawn was a part of their family. She never would have had to go through losing both her parents and her big sister. Angel never lost his soul. Tara never died and she and Willow were married. Buffy hadn't asked, but she'd already convinced herself that Anya was probably still alive in this other world too. Alive and married to Xander, of course. The First Evil had never attacked, so Sunnydale wasn't a crater. Even Faith herself seemed better off. Happy, well-adjusted. Buffy was never supposed to have been brought back after she faced the master. Maybe everything terrible that happened after that was her fault. It was all part of the universe trying to fix itself, to right the wrong of Buffy being alive. She'd struggled a lot throughout her realitively short life. Interally fought with herself on so many matters. But deep down she'd always believed that despite all the other pain and hurt, that she was doing good. That she was making the world a better place. Maybe she'd just been kidding herself all along. Feeling overwhelmed, Buffy gripped the wooden stake in her hand hard enough for it to splinter. There was a crack and the pieces of wood fell from her hand to the ground. She sighed and wiped her hand on her jeans. "Great," she muttered sulkily. "Even my stakes are better off without me around." Buffy shoved her hands in her pockets and continued on her unnessisary patrols. It was all she could think to do. |
