Don't You Just Wanna Pinch Jack's Cheeks?
Who: Jack and Maria
Where: Shopping District
What: Jack and Maria bump into each other and decide to go shopping
When: Backdated waaaay back to Sunday, January 4th
Status: Log, Complete
Maria had finished with her shift at the guard post, and she figured that a little retail therapy would do her some good. Not that she was doing terribly bad, nor was she exactly the shopping type, but she wanted to see the wares that were being sold in outer space, and if something sparked her interest, she was more than happy to partake. So far, though, as she walked from store window to store window, nothing was really catching her fancy, but she figured that if she was here for long enough, something would eventually catch her eye.
Jack had just finished a patrol himself, having worked for Security nearly as long as he'd been there. The tests to make sure he was suitable weren't as bad as he expected (and he'd had a few doozies back home), and the people he worked with were mostly nice. It was just hard to figure out what to do with his downtime. Which was why he was more of less wandering the shopping district. A few things he spotted made him think "Jo would like that," mostly weapons, as far as Jo was concerned. Or replicas. And when he spotted a dress he couldn't help it but think that Allison would look good in it. He missed home desperately, but not so much as he did when he was out on his own, left to think and wonder.
Maria was feeling lucky that she wasn't missing home nearly as bad. She had work to keep her busy, and, while she had friends at home, at least one was here now, so that made things a little better. When she spotted someone that she worked with here, Jack, she gave him a slight wave.
Jack blinked at the wave, then smiled when he discovered who the hand was attached to. "Hi. Sorry. Lost in my own little world," he said as he approached her, waggling his fingers near his temple. "How are you today, Miss Hill?"
"Completely alright," she said, giving him a smile as he came over. She was just used to not being able to get lost in her own world. "Doing alright, and please, call me Maria off the clock. What about you?"
"Maria," he replied respectfully in acknowledgement of her request, bobbing his head a few times as he shoved his hands into his pockets. "I'm doing alright. Heck of a time of year to be alone, though."
She nodded. "The holidays can be rough for people who are used to having family around." Maria certainly wasn't as much, but she at least understood it was hard for others.
"Yeah," he agreed. He missed his wife and children, no doubt. "What about you? Do you have anyone back home that you're missing, or are all of your friends here?" It certainly seemed like she had a lot of people from back home around her!
"A couple of coworkers who are friends, but people I know have started showing up here, actually," she explained. "That sounds sadder than I meant it when said aloud," she added with a laugh.
Jack laughed. "I think that that's good, to have people from back home that you can lean on if you need to." He cleared his throat awkwardly. Obviously he didn't have that. "But in saying that, not really knowing many people here... so far they're very approachable and nice. Like you, for instance."
She nodded. It really did help her out here quite a bit. "Everyone here has been really helpful and approachable. I mean, when you think of it from their perspective, they kind of just had all of us dumped on their lap." She smiled at him. "And thank you."
"Heh. That does explain why I heard Rocket mumble to himself the other day about being a glorified babysitter." It was kind of amusing, now that he thought about it. "Anyway, uh, do you feel up to some company?"
"A feeling I understand sometimes." Especially when it came to Stark. "And I don't mind the company at all, actually." She wouldn't have waved to him if she wanted to hide, after all.
"Great!" He replied, setting them off in a walk in the direction she'd been going in a moment before. "Not sure if I need anything myself, but I like to think that I've got a good eye if you need a second opinion on something."
Maria hadn't had a real destination in mind herself, but she was more than happy for the company. "I was curious what a spaceship would have as far as stores actually," she admitted with a smile.
"It's not all too dissimilar from home, as far as I can tell. I did pass a place a hundred yards back that was full of all kinds of intriguing stuff that I would've inevitably broke or inadvertently caused some kind of havoc with." A beat. "But I have an adult with me now, so maybe they'll let me in."
Maria chuckled. "Then let's go there," she suggested. "It's always hard to turn down the objects that could get us into trouble, after all."
