Emmeline Vance had always been the calm one, the rational one. She kept calm and carried on, even in the face of unimaginable terrors. The problem was, she wasn’t facing terrors. She was broken-hearted, exhausted, and inconsolable. Her heart and mind were full to bursting and that bloody music everywhere had her on edge. She couldn’t think. She just wanted peace. Obviously going to Ellis’s place was out of the question, and she couldn’t face Marlene. So instead she went in search of her other oldest friend. Lily. Fresh-faced, tiny Lily who was still unmarred by the ravages of war. Who was still whole and healthy, and alive. It was a beautiful and tragic thing to behold all at once. And it wasn’t until Emme was inside Lily’s flat that she’d realised her mistake. No, no. As much as she wanted the comfort, she couldn’t be with Lily right now. Her emotions were too high. She’d end up saying something she should. She’d end up telling them- “Would you know my name, if I saw you in heaven? Would it be the same, if I saw you in heaven? I must be strong and carry on- cause I know I don’t belong here in heaven.” Lily. James. They were both looking at her with widened eyes as she sang the words to them. “Would you hold my hand, if I saw you in heaven? Would you help me stand, if I saw you in heaven? I’ll find my way through night and day, cause I know I just can’t stay here in heaven. Time can bring you down. Time can bend your knees. Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please.” Please. Not like this. Tears rolled down Emmeline’s face. She wanted to run away from the flat to stop herself saying any more, but the damage was nearly done. “James, Lily- I-” The words she wanted to say were interrupted by the music. “May angels lead you in. Hear you me, my friends. On sleepless roads, the sleepless go. May angels lead you in. And if you were with me tonight. I'd sing to you just one more time. A song for a heart so big, God wouldn't let it live.” And there it was. She wiped at her face and looked at them. Blue eyes implored them to somehow be okay. But how could they? “It...it was Voldemort and the bloody war. You were 21. Married with a little baby boy. We thought we’d done everything we could to protect you both, but...it wasn’t enough. He turned up in the night and…” she dropped her head, long dark hair fell over her shoulders and obscured her face. “In the arms of the angel, fly away from here. From this dark, cold, hotel room. And the endlessness that you fear. You are pulled from the wreckage. Of your silent reverie. You’re in the arms of the angel. May you find some comfort here.” The silence that filled the room then was deafening. All Emmeline could do was look at two of her dearest friends and whisper “I’m so sorry.” The three songs included in this medley are: Tears In Heaven, Hear Me You, and Angel. |
