For as quickly has he had adjusted to becoming a soldier after the war had begun, Homer had been experiencing a little more trouble adjusting back to regular life. Of course he might have had an easier time of it if Knowhere had been anything like the life he’d known at home. He had Ellie and Fi, and that was helpful beyond belief, but everything else was foreign. No farm, no open spaces. Just the busy town and all the people who populated it. He did well enough at getting along, but he still preferred getting away to somewhere a little more quiet when he had the chance. That evening he’d invited Fi to come on a walk with him near the edge of town, where things were a little more quiet. He held her hand as they walked along in the cool darkness. He ran a thumb along the back of her palm. She looked absolutely beautiful that night. She always did, in his opinion. But something about her seemed even more stunning than usual. He wished he was better at explaining to her just how she made him feel. He’d always been such a dill when it came to her. She seemed to make all the words fly right out of his head. “Fi,” he said softly, looking in her direction as they walked. “I-- wanna be there just in time,” music had begun playing from somewhere, and Homer began to sing. “Wanna be your shining knight. Protect you like a solider. I wanna be the first in line, be the one to to save your life, all I wanna do is hold you.” The tempo began to pick up and Homer moved in front of Fi so they were face to face now, rather than side by side. “I will be your soldier, I’ll stand and fight until it’s over. And if your heart is getting colder, you know I will always be your soldier. You don’t have to hide your scars, I’ll be there when you fall apart, and fix you like a soldier. You don’t have to go too far, baby just lay down your arms. Now that the battle’s over.” He pulled her close, and the two turned to stare back over the lights of Knowhere together, his arms wrapped protectively around her. “I will be your soldier. I’ll stand and fight until it’s over. And if your heart is getting colder,” he placed his hand over her heart and kissed her lightly on the cheek. “You know I will always be your soldier.” For years it had always been her and El, they were closer then ever now and than Homer appeared. She couldn’t be happier, but she knew things were awkward with El now. They didn’t talk about it, because they had been through so much, but here was Homer, singing just to her and she couldn’t love him more than she did El. When he pulled her into him, she leaned into his frame, absorbing this moment he just made for him and her. After the brushing kiss on her cheek, she pulled back to look him, “It’s not colder,” she told him softly. A hand moved to touch his cheek, “I love you like I did back home, I’m just not the same girl as before.” “Life here is different than in the wild, we still have a lot of the unknown, but we are free. It has been El and myself for so long. I’m just glad you’ve come along,” she leaned into him, hugging him tightly. Homer had definitely felt the difference in his relationship with the girls since his arrival. He'd known Ellie for years, she was his closest friend. But now she had years of experiences that he didn't. It created a space between them that had never been there before. And he and Fi? Well, they'd still really just been getting to know each other. And strong as his feelings were for her, she'd changed too. Not that it meant Homer was about to give either of them up. As he'd just professed by song (what was that about anyway?) he intended to fight for them. Maybe not to get back to where the three of them were before, but to find a place among them in their new lives. "I know," Homer answered her. "I'm glad I'm here too." He hugged her back and smiled. The song included in this scene is Soldier by the Backstreet Boys. |
