It had been a long and strange day at the hospital and for once Lauren was happy that the day was finally over. It was with a heavy sigh that she sat at her desk in her office. She figured that she'd take a few moments to herself before heading home. She took off her lanyard to throw it in her desk drawer and was stopped momentarily when she spotted a photo of Bo inside. It was one of the few things that she had on her person when she was transported here, and now that the actual Bo was here--well, it made her feelings complicated. She quickly closed the drawer and shook her head. That was for Future!Lauren to worry about. Present!Lauren was too tired, too sore from such a long day. She closed her eyes and leaned back in her chair, intending only to rest a few moments before making the journey home.
Holly had just been relieved at the front desk, and knowing that Lauren was working later than usual, decided to surprise the woman with a short visit before heading home. When she got to the door though... she saw the doctor looking entirely run down and worn out, and felt her brow furrow in worry as she tapped lightly at the door.
"Lauren? Is, um... everything copacetic?"
Lauren cracked open her eyes at the sound of Holly's voice and smiled fondly (if tiredly) at the younger woman. "Everything's fine. It's just been a long day," she replied. She reached out a hand to Holly, a silent gesture that she wanted her to come in. "And how was your day?"
"It was ok... I guess..." Holly said, adorably shuffling her feet in a manner that didn't do well at helping her hide the anxiety that was rolling through her body right now. "Just missed you. Thought I'd come get in a little extra time with you." While I can... she thought to herself, taking a long, adoring look at the doctor.
"Well then, what're you doing all the way over there?" Lauren asked, a playful lilt to her voice despite how tired she was. She could sense that something was on Holly's mind, however, and sat up straighter to give her her full attention.
"Hm? Oh... I didn't want to be all... clingy, in case you were too exhausted. I know how hard you work." Holly said, giving a smile to her longtime girlfriend. They'd been together for a long while now... yet Holly had never been more worried about losing Lauren than she was right now. "How was your day?"
"I'm never too exhausted for you," Lauren replied. She did worry about the current distance between them, both literally and figuratively. Was that her fault? "Cosima is sick with some sort of space flu, so all of our blood work's backed up." She paused briefly. They couldn't dance around the topic of Bo forever. "Do you wanna talk about what's really on your mind?"
"I think we both know." Holly said, taking a deep breath before letting it all out. "When we first started dating, we had a conversation about our pasts. About our past loves. And I distinctly remember you calling Bo the love of your life. And now she's here. And I'm torn up over it. Because on one hand, I feel like scratching her eyes out and saying 'SHE'S MINE!', but on the other hand... what kind of person am I to try to keep you from your one true love?"
Lauren's eyes widened. Had she really been so insensitive to say something like that? ...Cluelessly, she probably had. She stood up immediately. "Hey, don't even--you don't have to worry about any of that."
"But... you should be with the person you love." Holly said, sniffling just a little as her eyes involuntarily welled up with tears. "But I'm freaking out because at this point I'm so in love with you that even the thought of you leaving me sends me into panic attacks!"
"No. No," Lauren cooed. She reached out to cup her hand behind Holly's neck, pulling her in for a cuddle whether she wanted it or not. "I love you, Holly. I'm not gonna leave you."
"You're sure you wouldn't want to go back to her? I mean... you said how much you loved her, and now she's HERE, and I get that you really never thought that could happen..." Holly babbled, nuzzling into Lauren despite herself.
Lauren swayed them from side to side as they hugged. She knew that she'd been absentminded lately, but to completely ignore how Holly felt was a dick move. "I've been here for a long time, Holly, and you've been with me for most of it. And I should've told you this a long time ago, but I'm glad that I came here. Because otherwise I wouldn't have met you."
"You.... seriously have no desire to go back to her?" Holly asked, before laughing through tears. "I mean... hot succubus with a body even I've caught myself checking out a few times... I really compare to that?"
Lauren playfully tugged at a lock of Holly's hair. "Have I not mentioned how amazing you are?" She held Holly's gaze. "You're kind, and beautiful and remarkably selfless. I'm very lucky to have you in my life. And I'm sorry if I haven't told you that lately."
Ok, admittedly... that felt like a huge weight being lifted from Holly's shoulders. She smiled, wiping the tears away with her sleeve, and just gazed at Lauren for a moment. She wondered to herself if this woman could possibly understand how beautiful she was, or how lucky Holly felt every day to have her in her life. "You know..." She chuckled, trying to lighten the mood, "You keep this up and I'm gonna just pounce on you right here in this office, Doc."
Lauren chuckled and gave Holly an impish look. "I'm tempted to ask you to lock the door." She knew that they hadn't exactly been amorous with each other lately, and could only blame herself with Bo's arrival clouding her mind. "I love the little crinkle around your eyes when you laugh, I love that little frown line between your eyebrows," she lightly touched her fingertip to where she meant, "when something worries you. I love that you've never lied to me and even in the face of all that you've been through, you always find a way to stay positive. I don't know how you do it. I'm just--I'm in awe of you."
"You're in awe... of me?" Holly asked, raising an eyebrow. "We're in a place with gods, and superheroes, and Jedi, and tree-people... and you're in awe of me." She wasn't mocking or teasing... she was just genuinely surprised by this!
Lauren chuckled. She couldn't help it! Holly was adorable. "Sweetie, the life that you've led most people couldn't do in three lifetimes, let alone one. Of course I'm in awe of you."
"...you just want me to wear the Catwoman suit for you. I am SO onto you." Holly smirked, adding a little levity to the moment. She knew Lauren was right... but talk of her past inevitably made her think of some of the darker times as well. Noooo thank you. "Sad part is, I don't lack confidence. I haven't for a long time now. But you're so damned beautiful that I still can't wrap my head around the fact that I'm the one you want."
"You got me," Lauren said about the Catwoman costume, smirking a little. She could add a little levity too, okay? "You're too good for my ego, did you know that?" She joked. She paused for a moment. "Are we okay?"
"We... are very much okay." Holly said with a dreamy little smirk, pausing only to lean in and place a soft, almost innocent kiss on Lauren's lips. "Sorry if I went all... 'clingy-girlfriend' on you. I know it's not the most appealing look on me..."
Lauren's eyes fluttered closed briefly. "Well, I happen to disagree. It's just one of the many ways that you show me that you love me." She gave Holly's arms a squeeze. "Let's head home, okay?"
"Well, we can head back to the apartment, yeah." Holly said, giving a lopsided grin at the gorgeous doctor. "But home, well... home is wherever you are."
Lauren smiled. That sounded about right. She cupped Holly's cheeks and pressed her lips to the other woman's, pouring all of the love and devotion that she had for her into it.
