It was well past the middle of the night when Izzie Stevens got home to her family. She’d been pulled into an emergency surgery and came home hours later than she’d originally planned. Her surgery had gone well though, and she was pleasantly exhausted when she arrived home. Still, for as tired as she was, Izzie couldn’t go to sleep until she checked on everyone. She slipped off her jacket and shoes when she entered the apartment, and moved through the darkness toward Amy’s room. As she slipped down the hallway, Izzie began singing softly to herself. “When life leaves you high and dry, I’ll be at your door tonight if you need help, if you need help. I’ll shut down the city lights. I’ll lie, cheat, I’ll beg and bribe to make you well, to make you well.” She reached Amy’s door and looked in on the sleeping girl she now thought of as her daughter. “When enemies are at your door, I’ll carry you away from war, if you need help, if you need help. Your hope dangling by a string, I’ll share in your suffering to make you well. To make you well.” She slipped into the room and checked on baby Zander sleeping in his crib. She fixed his blankets and leaned in to kiss him on the cheek. “Give me reasons to believe. That you would do the same for me. And I would do it for you, for you.” She moved over to Amy’s bed and straightened out the teen’s blankets as well. “Baby I’m not moving on, I love you long after you’re gone. For you, for you. You would never sleep alone, I love you long after you’re gone. And long after you’re gone, gone gone.” Moving from the first bedroom, Izzie moved to the room she shared with Alex. He was sleeping heavily on his side and she couldn’t help but smile lovingly at him as she slipped out of her clothes. “When you fall like a statue, I’m gonna be there to catch you. Put you on your feet, you on your feet. And if your well is empty, not a thing will prevent me, tell me what you need. What you need.” Izzie unclipped her hair and pulled a nightgown over her head before she slid into bed beside her husband. “I surrender honestly, you’ve always done the same for me. So I would do it for you, for you. Baby, I’m not moving on. I love you long after you’re gone. For you, for you. You would never sleep alone, I love you long after you’re gone. And long after you’re gone, gone gone.” Still half asleep, Alex felt her next to him and reached his arms out to pull her in close. Izzie snuggled against him and kissed his arm. “You’re my back bone, you’re my cornerstone, you’re my crutch when my legs stop moving. You’re my head-start, you’re my rugged heart, you’re the pulse that I’ve always needed. Like a drum baby, don’t stop beating. Like a drum baby don’t stop beating. Like a drum baby don’t stop beating, like a drum my heart never stops beating for you, for you. Baby I’m not moving on, I love you long after you’re gone. I love you long after you’re gone, gone gone.” Safe in Alex’s arms, and filled with the love she had for her family, Izzie closed her eyes and happily drifted off to sleep, a smile still on her face. The song used in this scene is: Gone Gone Gone by Phillip Phillips. |
