"Wow, the cheek on this one." Miles muttered with a grin, shaking his head a little. Sure, Chapin practically redefined the word 'brat'... but she had a good heart beneath it all. Besides, she kept Miles on his toes.
He couldn't help but bark out a laugh when she so blatantly asked for her gift, though. Credit where it's due: the girl had no problem going after whatever she wanted.
"Alright. So. I'm not gonna make a big deal outta this, because I don't want you to get the wrong idea and hit me." Hah! Well, at least he knew her by now. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a tiny box. He opened it, and held it out to her: in the box was a small, delicate-looking gold ring with a small ruby set in it.
"We're both young. And while I go to sleep every night terrified that the stone is going to send you home during the night... I also know that rushing you into anything is a very bad idea. So... what this is, is a promise ring. It means I love you... I dedicate myself to you and you alone... and that one day, when the time is right, I'm gonna marry you."
