The silence that followed her question wasn't entirely surprising to Emme. It wasn't an easy thing to answer. She lifted her head from Marlene's shoulder and watched her, patiently, to see what she would say.
When the music started to play, Emme grew extremely tense. Panic made her heart rate increase. The last time she'd watched someone she cared about sing, she'd ended up with her heart broken. The fear of that happening again gripped her tightly. But as she processed Marlene's words, her panic was replaced with astonishment.
She felt a coldness seeping through her, and as Marlene turned back to lock eyes with her, it was if someone had just punched Emme in the gut. She struggled to inhale.
As the song ended, Emme watched Marlene carefully. She'd known Marly fancied her. The girls had always flirted and teased each other, long after their school-aged experimentation. But she'd thought that's all it was. "I didn't know." She said softly.
