It was Marlene's utter sincerity that finally brought Emme's guard down. She needed to talk to someone about it. She'd been avoiding it, but at the gentlest of prods from her best friend, Emme couldn't stem the tide any longer.
"Ellis is in love with another woman." The words fell out of her mouth before she could stop them. And once they were out, she couldn't hold back. "This woman completely broke her heart back before we even started dating, and I was the one who put all the pieces back together again. I thought we were building something, but the second Arizona showed up here again, I felt Ellis start to pull away. She kept promising me that everything was fine, but then I showed up at this hospital yesterday to meet her for lunch, and she's just sitting there, pining over Arizona while singing a love song."
She hadn't fully begun crying again, but her eyes shone and pink blotches had appeared on her cheeks. "It's just so...so..." She couldn't find the right words. "I feel like such a fucking second choice, Mar. She only ever wanted me when Arizona wasn't an option."
