The noise in the hospital cafeteria, usually a dull roar on any given day, had quieted to near silence. It was nothing to do with the patrons, of course, and everything to do with Ellis. Ellis Shepherd and the longing with which she sat watching Arizona Robbins. Emmeline stood by, unnoticed, as her girlfriend pined for another woman. She pressed her lips together and swallowed the lump of emotion that had risen in her throat. It wasn’t even a surprise, really. Which somehow made the hurt go even deeper. Emme had seen first hand just how much Ellis loved Arizona even before they’d shared a kiss. Ellis had been broken and hopeless when Emmeline had stepped in to try and fit the pieces back together again. As someone who’d spent too many years feeling broken and hopeless herself, she’d thought maybe the two of them could build each other back up again together. But as Emme knew all too well, life often sent all her best plans awry. She turned away from the cafeteria, no longer interested in meeting Ellis for lunch. Head down, she maneuvered her way through the hospital’s hallways. As she moved, a gently melody began playing behind her. Emme closed her eyes for a brief moment, inhaled, and then began to sing. “I took my love, I took it down. Climbed a mountain and I turned around. And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills, 'Til the landslide brought it down. Oh, mirror in the sky What is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides? Can I handle the seasons of my life?” She found her way through the maze of hallways and back out to the hospital’s entrance. The doors swung open for her and she stepped back outside into the afternoon sunlight. “Well, I've been afraid of changin', cause I've built my life around you. But time makes you bolder, even children get older, and I'm getting older, too.” She wrapped her arms around herself and began the walk home, not paying much attention to what was going on around her. The only thing she seemed to be able to focus on were the words still pouring from her. “Well, I've been afraid of changin', cause I've built my life around you. But time makes you bolder, even children get older. And I'm getting older, too. Oh, I'm getting older, too.I took my love, I took it down. I climbed a mountain and I turned around. And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills, well the landslide will bring it down. And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills, well the landslide will bring it down. Oh, the landslide will bring it down.” As the song ended, Emme wiped a few tears away and hurried the rest of the way back home. The song included in this narrative is: Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. |
