"They're not backing off," Connor said, doing his best to sound calm.
Aunt Daisy swore under her breath as she sped up. The other two vehicles sped up right along with her, not giving an inch of space. It was so obvious to Aves that they were in trouble. Control was still a difficult thing for her, but she'd manifested three years ago. It was long enough to learn what she needed.
"Connor?" she asked.
Her brother turned and looked at Aves, then nodded once. "Do it."
Her eyes shaded over as Avery turned in her seat to face the car behind them, her hands gripping the back of the seat as she sat so unsafely. It was worth the risk to her. Even as a kid, she believed in protecting those she loved. As the car behind them was enveloped in darkness it dropped back, but the car beside them rammed into the side of their car. Aunt Daisy cursed, Connor yelled for Aves to sit, and Aves hurried to sit correctly. She almost made it in time as the car rammed into them again, tossing their car into the median between the halves of the highway. A rock was what flipped the van, and as the car rolled the second time, Aves had a moment, suspended with nothing touching her, and as scared as she was, she couldn't help but to wonder if that was anything like flying. Then the car landed on its roof, Avery's left leg was pinned, and Connor was somehow already climbing out of the car, gun in hand, shooting at the car that had run them off the road.
